All of my financial apps work without gservices, funny enough.

I use iOS and a couple of years ago I thought, "My next phone, whenever that is, will once again be Android." But the Android shit seems so complicated. The situation seems to be: Do you want outright Google spyware, or partial Google spyware that partially works?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago

Hey, you can get to almost no google spyware but requires google hardware (the great irony) if you go GrapheneOS and really complex FOSS tech stacks with possible self-hosting! I hope you have time for a new hobby if you want that route

If we're being real everyone does use GSF, custom rom users make up less than a tenth of a percent of android users worldwide, and the amount of people not using GSF on a custom rom is probably even less than that.

Also besides the point but one could argue being Firefox based on android would protect the user less given some of Gecko's insecurities compared to Blink.

Be my guest, uninstall GPServices and see. It’s known that all mainstream apps require it. Things like youtube obviously, and all google apps, uber, lyft, reddit, bank apps, discord (unsure), mcdonalds, burger king, yuka…

the burger apps killed me 😭😭😭😭😭 I cannot comprehend the American mind

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You don't understand, they need the burger apps.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago

i will fucking die without my burger deals

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago

What gets me is that 1 app for the burger wasnt enough they need TWO just in case they want the slightly different burger today.

It's true though. My primary phone is a rooted android with gapps but it's a pain in the ass to get banking apps working.

Google has made it more difficult since apps find you are bootloader unlocked even if you are not rooted.

Grapheneos is fine if you want to use your phone for web browsing, some gaming and media watching.

Anecdotally I've never had an app refuse to work on GrapheneOS with the sandboxed play store. Most I've had to do is enable the compatibility mode. Even all my banking apps work

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I don't even have the sandboxed Play store and everything works. I use Aurora to download APKs for anything that isn't FOSS (which is like, two things)

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Are you using microG or Google Services Framework at all?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

MicroG might be installed, but I don't use anything that uses it. Since Aurora lets you search for apps that don't require it, I always go for one that doesn't.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Oh. Well then yeah of course it'll all work

[–] [email protected] 0 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

The point is that people severely exaggerate how "unusable" a degoogled phone is. There are FOSS alternatives to most things, and anything there isn't an alternative to is probably a shitty service that you'd be better off without (see: burger apps)

[–] [email protected] 0 points 22 hours ago

Banking apps are pretty important, as is mychart for my doctor. I suppose I could get them through browser or PWA but it's massively easier to just get the app.

I wouldn't call a completely degoogled phone "unusable" but for most people it's going to be mildly to massively inconvenient for little benefit. You can get like 90% of that benefit for 2% of the inconvenience with the sandboxed playstore

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I've never had a problem surprisingly with banking apps. Graphene does everything i need it for. I have google play sandboxed in another user to use apps that need that. Stuff like 小红书, gmail, banking. All works without issue. Maybe it's because i use a pixel with graphene? I know thats the main one they work on.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago

It's in fact the only one they work on currently. But unlike other rooms you do get to relock the bootloader safely which is nice

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Yes, but please look at the while thread

It was all about some Browser for Mac advertising itself AS the 1 for all solution for being Tracked, and the dude just started talking about how I shouldnt criticize them because Apple is the less evil and all Android OSs have Gapps

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I just want a legitimately functional GNU/Linux device with decent app support that works on US networks doggirl-tears

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

It's so fucking bad, I really don't want my phone to break because these new ones look so fucking frustrating to even unlock the bootloader. I am seriously considering to abandon smartphones all together tbh

All phone manufacturers go to wall-flipped

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago

I've given up on the bootloader/rooting/custom roms thing a long time ago because of the frustration.
