MODERATORS

If you are still looking for an alternative, https://lemmy.zip/ is a solid choice. Similar moderation policy than lemm.ee.

Monthly reports: https://lemmy.zip/post/39959863

Lots of lemm.ee users moving there: https://lemmy.zip/post/40323214

If you are in the UK (where lemmy.zip is geoblocked due to UK laws), https://feddit.uk/ is a good option.

You can export your subscriptions, blocks and saves from "Settings - Import/Export settings" and then import them on your new account.

I already moved to Lemmy.zip (they just accepted my account), I exported the lemm.ee settings from the configuration page to lemmy.zip, but I'd also like to backup my upvoted and saved posts (I am interested more in the latter), any ideas?

EDIT: nvm, it seems they were exported? it took a little to make them appear, maybe upvoted content is a no-no then.

Farewell to the best Lemmy instance!

I think I should be trying Lemmy.zip instance. Any feedback on that?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Is there a list of that shows where the main communities on lemm.ee are moving to?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 6 days ago

Point your new account/instance by adding it on your lemm.ee bio! So others can find you.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 6 days ago

Thanks for the good times lemm.ee. Just got my zip account today.

I'm just leaving this whole platform.

It's nothing special. Every fucking idiot you've ever met in your life on Reddit is coalescing here.

Have you had a meaningful conversation here? An informative one? I've been here 2+ years and I can honestly say no.

Have you seen a link that isn't effectively a complete recycling of what you already know to be true?

It's the same recycled bullshit you have seen for the last 20 years.

The whole format of a "democratic" link dump site is fundamentally broken. I see that now.

Sounds like you’re going through a lot. Hope you can find somewhere to outlet your emotions.

Nice of you

I've migrated this account to db0 and making copy accounts at a few other places such as sopuli.

The only thing I'm missing is how to migrate my posts, can't find a way to do that.

And, gonna be real:

Gonna miss lemm.ee. It has a je ne sais quadracoptêre that made it feel a quite cozy community, somehow.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 6 days ago

Posts are federated already, so you can't migrate them. The content from your old account is already on the new server, just under your old account name. Importing posts to a new account, especially if they "posted" from that new account isnt possible.

It would be great to have a "migrated/archived" tab on an account that would bring over posts/content in a local only way that was just attached to that account, but that's not a feature lemmy has.

Well, it's been an, uh, interesting trial of Lemmy these past few months but I ultimately don't think this place is a viable replacement for reddit. Too many weirdos, too many extremist instances, communities distributed to the point of total dilution, and instances just disappearing when some dude is sick of it. Goodbye lemm.ee and Lemmy, good luck.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago

Based on your moderation history, seems like you interacted with Hexbear. They are quite unique.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago

A lot of hive mind, too.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Moved over to zip no problem, but I can’t find a way to export my comments/posts. I know I can access my profile via zip but will that be cached and available after the servers are shut down?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

What do you mean by "export my comments/posts"? You can't migrate your posts from one account to the other if that's the question.

Your account on zip will be a new one just with imported settings and communities you follow

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago

I’d like a list of links to them so I can at least go view them on instances they’ve federated to at some time.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago (4 children)

No, Lemmy has a memory hole problem right now. All the content you created is only on the servers online and federated at the time you created it. Once those servers go offline, for any reason, that content is gone

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I've considered setting up a static read-only copy of lemm.ee, but without being able to host this on the original domain i don't think it'll be of much use. i already reached out to @[email protected] to see if he would be interested in something like this, doesn't seem like anything was planned from his end so far.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If that means making sure old content is still reachable in an "authoritative" way (eg.: being able to retain some sort of permaURL), I'm all for it and would wish you all the best luck.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 6 days ago

My idea was to serve it in a way that would allow ActivityPub clients to resolve content still, while having a light static render for other clients for local content.

For content on other instances it would probably require some kind of lightweight redirection service towards the original item to be set up to prevent breaking those URLs.

This could probably be built just from scraping, without requiring database access.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago

Not quite right there. The comments exist on all the other federated servers as they’re sent out as part of the ActivityPub protocol. The problem is there will no longer be an easy way to aggregate them. Posts may disappear. But comments won’t.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

As far as I understood, the already posted/federated content is stored by each instance in its database. The pictures/media might be gone but the text should be copied around depends on (de)federation policies

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago

Yes that's correct, new instances don't backfill old content. Only the servers online and federated at the time of posting will have the content.

If you migrate to a new instance that wasn't online or federated earlier it won't have your old content

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago

Incorrect, that content is mirrored to any of the instances that federated with Lemm.ee and will continue to be accessible; although if you interact with any of it after Lemm.ee is gone, that interaction (vote, comment) will only be visible on the instance on which you did it.

I’m not 100% how this all works. I use the Voyager app on iOS with Lemm.ee. Do I need to switch apps as well as make a new account?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Not at all. To create an account on a new instance with voyager:

  1. Click on your account in the bottom center.
  2. click “Accounts” on the top left.
  3. Click “Edit” on the top right
  4. Click on the + at the top left

It will let you create a new account on any server you wish and use it with voyager.

For example, I’m on the lemmy.blahaj.zone instance, and I am communicating to you with voyager. But I also sometimes communicate with my alt @[email protected] and I access that from voyager too.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago

Thank you so much!

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Can anyone fill me in? Why is your instance shutting down? Is this permanent?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Thanks, surprising but appreciate the filling in

Pawsitivly un-bear-able

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago

gonna miss you, lemm.ee.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If you want to try out PieFed (An alternative front-end to the Fediverse) instead of Lemmy you can check out quokk.au or piefed.social

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Any of these having similar moderation and federation policy as lemm.ee?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Piefed.zip is managed by the lemmy.zip team. Their blocked list is similar to the lemm.ee one: https://lemmy.zip/instances

[–] [email protected] 1 points 23 hours ago* (last edited 23 hours ago) (1 children)

Not the original commenter but I was digging for a couple alternatives before the end times arrive so thanks for sharing this

Does the lemmy import and export settings/saved posts still work? I doubt it but just thought I’d ask

[–] [email protected] 1 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

It should, if you still manage to access Lemm.ee

It's now down for me, but this might be a me issue.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 19 hours ago

Oh that’s good

My speed has been spotty but I’m sure that’s cus a lots happening both backend and user stuff

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If you are in the UK (where lemmy.zip is geoblocked due to UK laws),

Wait why?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If you are in the UK (where lemmy.zip is geoblocked due to UK laws)[...]

That's news for me. Anyone know what law(s) exactly they have problems with?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago

See you around fellow lemmeers.
