I don't read a lot of games writing because a) most of it is pish and b) there's too much else to read but I really enjoyed this one.

This bit genuinely made me lol:

Books FIFA 2003 and SimCity 3000 computer games.

Soccer makes me feel empty and I barely know how to read, so the first two mean nothing to me

Yeah neither do I, but the folks at PCgamer and Rock Paper Shotgun are pretty good possibly even comrades. My phone doesn't get a signal at my desk so when I sit there for long stretches with no sales calls or orders to process I just browse them and watch youtube shit.

Yeah Rock Paper Shotgun even has a decent comment section at times. Might be my fave site for pc games since it also covers lots of indie stuff

It's a shame really because I'm probably contributing to a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy of not reading games journalism because most of it is bad, therefore not finding the better stuff etc.

He's going to be the mayor and in his free time he plays a city management game. This is like the pilots who go home and play flight simulator.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago

No joke but i have a pilot friend who did that 😂

The most controversial part of this is 3000 isn't even the best one

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago

Yeah 3000 was kinda shit.

Oops, your power isn't connected, for no predictable reason.

Oops, the water supply ran out and now that specific pipe just won't carry water anymore.

No campaigns or real tutorial to learn the ins and outs of this stuff, only sandbox.

Reason for lack of development: Lack of chocolate sprinkles

Motherfucker, give me something I can build an understanding on top of.

Only if he also is adding free pubs to the city owned grocer plan.

Asking for "books" in general for Christmas as an 11 year old? Yeah, this dude has been a turbo-nerd his whole life. And I say that as a former Asian kid who got books for Christmas as an 11-year-old.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Is it only asking for "books" in general that makes you a turbo-nerd? Tbf I find it weird for an older child to ask for "books" instead of specific books. But I have asked for specific books as gifts my whole childhood... I think when I was like 6-ish I would ask for "books" because I just knew I liked reading but not any specific books. But by that age I was asking for specific books.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago

Yeah I think it's weird to just ask for "books" in general lol Like imagine any kid just asking for "video games" like they don't care whether it's Tetris or CoD

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 weeks ago

as a former Asian kid

Are you a hispanic kid now

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

i used to like books at that age I-was-saying

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 weeks ago

Same. mao-red-book (Actually it was mostly the new, early Terry Prattchet Discworld books back then. But a lot of those have pretty based politics too)

Gaming at its best is a kind of dialectical systemic analysis.

How likely is it that he plays Workers & Resources: Soviet Republic?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 weeks ago

For real, game development has led to decades of insights from incentivizing player behavior, balancing rule-sets, to cultivating online spaces; and virtually none of those lessons have translated into the political realm.
