The only real rule is that it must be an actively inhabited/used location (ie not ruins or natural locales). Otherwise, go wild. Anything that you find beautiful or interesting!
Bet it's beautiful inside. I have a love for cultures that don't give a shit about the outside of the domicile but go nuts inside.
The French Quarter in New Orleans is an American example. Everything looks like shit from the street, but get behind a door or into a courtyard and it's a wonder.
