It has a pretty good claim. It's about 60% Russian by population and was (along with the rest of Ukraine) a part of Russia or the USSR from the 1700's until 1991.

You mean like the British did in N. Ireland, the Canadians and Americans and Australians did to their indigenous populations, Spain did to S. America, etc. I'm not saying it's right or trying to excuse them, but many of the countries that condemn them have done this or are doing it.
