MODERATORS

Hello. The past few months Ive been almost exclusively playing fantasy and survival games, so much so that I need a break from them.

Looking for single player FPS recommendations with controller support from the last decade. A good story is preferred.

Games Ive played:

  1. Warframe (dont ask. The lore is okay-ish. I stayed for friends).
  2. Titanfall 2. (PEAK)
  3. Apex Legends (Briefly. The sweatiness and timed lore turned me off).
  4. Doom 2016 (Dropped this, sadly. Gunplay and parkour was AWESOME, but the whole devil worship thing really turned me off. Edit: The devil Worshippers themselves turned me off. You do not worship devils ingame. More details in comments).
  5. Dying Light 1. (Okay Story. Awesome fighting. Never played 2 because of the whole controversy with the ~~story director~~. EDIT: Story writer, not director)
  6. The Metro Series. 1, 2 and Exodus. (Slightly weak lore. Still alot of fun).

Any help in this regard would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: regarding Dying Light:

Edit: Thanks for the suggestions everyone! Currently gonna try:

  • The Half Life Series.
  • Halo
  • Wolfenstein: New Order.

If you want an unorthodox suggestion, Metal:Hellsinger is a rhythm-FPS that's not like GOTY material, but it's a lot of fun. Great for turning your brain off and just going vibe mode while you shoot a bunch of demons.

I didn't see it suggested yet, but you should check out Selaco. It's a fairly new FPS with tight gunplay and retro graphics. The enemies AI is well made, they will work together to hunt you and try to flank you. The weapons are a mix of standard fare with some new stuff, and you can modify them with upgrade packs similar to how Doom 2016 does it. The upgrades give each weapon a good variety for different play styles.

The first chapter is released and playable, and there are 2 more chapters coming. The first chapter has a good amount of gameplay, I put 35 hours in it.

I second this recommendation 👍 Generally it should work better with a controller as well.

not sure if the guy is trolling or not, but this exactly how i imagine an ign reviewer.

The Battlefield games are often on sale very cheap. 3, 4 & 5 with a good story line and small multiplayer communities.

Team Fortress Two is still very active.

If you enjoy zombi bashing but don't care for all the depressive atmosphere of Dying Light, but would rather kick some ass, I would recommend Dead Island (1 or 2). The close combat fighting is visceral and fun and while the story has some real drama at times, it's generally upbeat.

Seriously, I've had Dying Light for years not every time I get too brought down by the overall vibe and constantly feeling so weak. Whereas DI had me shredding a tear at least once but you kick ass throughout.

Far Cry 5. you blaspheme your way across montana, killing and pillaging, to a kick-ass soundtrack.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Probably the best of the Far Cry's, which to me otherwise mostly feel like the same game.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 4 days ago

3, 4, 5 are the same game, but Far Cry Primal stands out, with smilodon ride on trippy shamanic juice, very enjoyable.

Tangent: maybe we should classify FPS by more vectors, such as progression of gunplay (Doom 2016 is a masterpiece there, Titanfall 2 a failure), strength of story (most military-themed FPS are cringe-fests in terms of story), Lore/Tech (Bioshock's Steampunk theme always turned me off, for example), suspense (Prey excels there, COD bores) ... and many more.

This way, we might actually find decent FPS that each of us enjoy based on our tastes. <3

Prey is not an FPS, it's an immersive sim. Yes there is shooting in Prey, but not nearly to the level an actual FPS has it.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago

Prey (2017) was so fucking good and cool and innovative that I can't even be mad that it completely overshadows Prey (2006) which was also a really cool and innovative game from my memory of the time, although i haven't replayed it recently to see if it holds up.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 5 days ago

Portal 1&2, for a change of pace.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 days ago

Helldivers 2

It’s primarily 3rd person but then again so is Warframe.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 days ago

Serious Sam 3 is an FPS distilled into its most essential parts, imo.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 days ago

F.E.A.R. series, Half life series (including black mesa remake) S.t.a.l.k.e.r series

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 days ago

Control is pretty good. I'm stuck at a part though and refuse to look up the solution.

I've played the beginning of atomic heart and it seems fun as hell.

Both games have telekinetic abilities which apparently I like.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 days ago

Half life 2 was really good.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 6 days ago

Dishonored, Dishonored 2, Deathloop, and Prey.

If you enjoy Titanfall 2 you might like Call of Duty Black Ops 3. I still havent found a game that handles so well and feels so smooth. It got a lot of flak at the time (2014) because everyone was tired of future shoooters, but imo it has the best fps mechanics not only in cod, but in any fps game. The story is also really good; I wont spoil but it does get kinda philosophical and has plenty of twists and turns.

As others have said, the Half Life series is probably the best fps objectively. I started with 2 and then played 1, so while they do go in order, it isn't required. HL1 is a bit clunky but still great.

Also James Bond 007 games are criminally underrated. Everyone knows about Goldeneye for the N64, but some of my favorites are Nightfire, From Russia with Love, Everything or Nothing, and Goldeneye Reloaded. A lot of the Steam pages were taken down for them though, and are only really playable on console, but definitely worth it if you are able to play

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 days ago

HL1 is a bit clunky but still great.

Try out Black Mesa. It's a proper remake of HL1, not just a reskin. They did a damn good job, including a very large build out of the Xen levels, making it into a proper portion of the game, rather than what existed in HL1 which felt a bit rushed.

The Half-Life series

  • Black Mesa instead of Half-Life. It's an extremely faithful remake that's absolute joy and I would play it instead of the original now that it exists. Not only the graphics are updated, but also the last chapter of the original game which got rushed to meet deadlines is masterfully completed in Black Mesa
  • Half-Life 2 and it's subsequent episodes
[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 days ago

Am currently playing Black Mesa after having only completed the original in Sven Co-op. It's nice!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Half life 2 is so damn good. One of my most replayed games.

And full points to Black Mesa for actually improving the game, not just reskinning it. 10/10

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 days ago

I thoroughly enjoyed black mesa but I don't think it improved the game. I think it's a pretty unbalanced experience with a lot of the original atmosphere replaced with pretty textures. I also think the xen levels were extremely unfaithful to the original and devoid of a lot of the original meaning, but again visually stunning.

Black Mesa was so good, it made me cry. 🥹

Devil worship? In DOOM? I remember interacting with lots of demons but I definitely wasn't worshipping them.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 6 days ago

One of the main level designers for original Doom "Sandy of Cthulu" was a pretty serious mormon christian.

"I have no problems with the demons in the game. They're just cartoons. And, anyway, they're the bad guys."

Half Life 2 is excellent.

FEAR 2 is good and scary enough for me.

Cyberpunk 2077

Trepang2

Black Mesa is a remake of HL1 and very good

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 days ago

Half Life pretty much started the whole 'FPS games with a story told throughout the gameplay' which you seem to have a lot of games played like that.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 days ago

Warframe isn't a FPS.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

Doom 2016 (Dropped this, sadly. Gunplay and parkour was AWESOME, but the whole devil worship thing really turned me off).

Off topic, but this game is the exact opposite of devil worship. The primary gameplay is to travel to Hell and kill demons.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Should have been clearer. The devil worshippers themselves creeped me out way too much for me to continue.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 days ago

Ah, I could see that. It does have quite a bit of such things.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

In-game or real life? Lol

I don't remember any controversy surrounding DOOM and satanists irl

[–] [email protected] 9 points 6 days ago

I get really invested in what I play. So long as background lore is consistent, I end making my own char lore and having a blast with it. The cult, as shown ingame, just really creeped me out.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 6 days ago

The bioshock games (1, 2 and infinity) are all really good fps games with a good story and the best part of it, is really easy to buy all of them for dirty cheap on steam when they are on sale

[–] [email protected] 7 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

Cyberpunk 2077. It's a futuristic FPS that feels very similar to GTA. I personally like the integration between uploading viruses to enemies while you shoot at them. And the stories are often quite good.

You can get it on sale for half price. And the Phantom Liberty DLC is worth getting bundled with it.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

There are entire AAA games with less content than Phantom Liberty

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

Maaaaan I’ve had that installed for a long time and have never played it. I should start that this weekend.
