Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Pearl is the only one with a properly sized hat, and she also got the cuffs right, which not all of them did.

Is the response supposed to imply that there is actually an obvious winner? Because I think they're all fabulous

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

One of them is a very sexist & openly corrupt person in power ... wait, all of them have a sus amount of power actually (ok, only one has exclusively political power?)

The ~~commenter~~ beekirby really wants to fuck a bird in a suit, and just assumes everyone else does too.

Wait "the obvious" one isn't supposed to be the she/they from steven universe? On tumblr?

[–] [email protected] 16 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Do you have any idea how little that narrows it down?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 5 days ago (2 children)

I get your reference but there's only 1 bird in there.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

The UK: "correct, bottom left"

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 days ago

No beak, too weak.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Pearl is often referred to as a bird both in the show and in the Fandom

[–] [email protected] 6 points 5 days ago (1 children)

And yet, a proper birdsexual wouldn't even care to look at that nonbeaked individual.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 days ago

I've been out-freaked

Finn is my boy, but the animation style isn’t doing his tuxedo fit any favors.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 6 days ago

That thigh gap 🫦

[–] [email protected] 7 points 6 days ago

The monocle is where the sexy is at.

I wanted to edit this in the image using gimp but couldn't do it without making the text impossible to read. The Mayor is the only one who didn't fumble his relationship out of the four

[–] [email protected] 15 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (2 children)

Pearl didn't fumble Rose. Rose was always going to do what she wanted. There was nothing Pearl could have done to keep Rose.

Also, Finn is a teenager. Fumbling relationships is expected at that age.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 days ago

Any "fumble" is the result of the object of your affection making their own choices, lol.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

Yeah i know, its just when i was browsing pinterst and the idea came to me. But i would argue that pearl at the beginning thought that she fumbled

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Mayor has a relationship??

[–] [email protected] 20 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I know its not really a relationships buts its funner for the sack of the joke

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Thank Eris this isn't how I find out they're an item, there isn't enough booze in the house

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 days ago (1 children)

It was always heavily implied

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 days ago

For the jokes.

That's my firm stance... 🫣

[–] [email protected] 58 points 6 days ago (2 children)

TBH I’m partial to Tuxedo Pearl, but that’s more a statement on the series than anything else.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 6 days ago

i never even finished the show and i STILL love mr. greg. it’s one of the scant examples of a musical episode done really well.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Steven Universe is such an excellent show, I can't believe it came out of Cartoon Network LMAO

Have they done anything as good since?

[–] [email protected] 10 points 6 days ago (2 children)

I got really exhausted with the dialogue the internet was having about the series after it ended. People were comparing story points to ATLA and were calling the show trash because Steven “reformed” certain characters instead of “punishing” them. Like I get what they’re saying in the context of a real-world-scenario, but damn some people really missed what the show was about. Especially since it’s a children’s cartoon at the end of the day

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Edit: replied to the wrong comment lol

[–] [email protected] 6 points 5 days ago (3 children)

I'm sorry to do this but "its a children's cartoon" isn't a reason to not think critically of this show. It takes itself VERY seriously and deserves serious thought. We're not examining the Deep Lore of Spongebob here.

The critique was overblown but its still not wrong. If we weren't shown the planetary destruction/genocide the Diamonds (the antagonists) were doing, I would agree entirely that people were thinking about a cartoon too hard. But the show makes a point to explore the destruction, the genocides and "human zoo" and its effects. It tells us directly why it happens and who is responsible. It takes it seriously, dwells on it, and then expects us to move on. Its reasonable to ask why the show chose to do this.

Someone chose to write this show this way. We don't actually need Steven's mother's family to be literal fascists (they are the heads of an alien government if you did not watch the series) on top of being emotionally constipated and abusive. Pick one plot thread or make more characters. Send the Space Nazis to Space Jail for their Space Crimes.

There's plenty of good in the show, though. That's why people spend so much energy complaining about it. If it were simply bad people would have forgotten about it immediately. The haters are fans whether they will admit it or not.

The problems with Steven Universe are similar to the reasons I hated Harry Potter as a kid. I knew what slavery was, and I knew Hermione was right to fight it even when the author tried to frame her as a silly busy-body. It wasn't even the only problem I had with the series as a kid, just the last straw. Kids are thoughtful and deserve good media.

(Steven universe is better than that series, just an observation)

I think there's so much progress shown that even with such a large issue I don't think it should overwhelm everyone's option of the whole show.

It was my first experience seeing anything queer that isn't just "gross dumb man dating other gross dumb man" (I was raised in the south by a homophobic mother who censored a lot) and to not take how vital the basic realization of "queer love is still love" to me was and complain that it didn't do enough leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

That said rewatching it I agree with your points, but it's still a very amazing show that shouldn't be overshadowed by the ending.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago) (1 children)

I know the show is very old at this point, but anyone thinking about watching it who hasn't already been spoiled definitely should without being so, it's 100% worth it.

SpoilerReally I feel like the main problem with the ending was just how rushed it was. Steven and the other gems grappling with finding out rose quartz was actually pink diamond lasted a lot longer, and was also a major part of both the movie and su: future, and in comparison she was way less bad, both by virtue of being younger and also starting the crystal gems. I think given more time it would have been a much more fleshed out arc with a more serious exploration of the diamonds personalities and their remorse, like how the rest of the show dealt with those themes. Like peridot's arc took basically a whole season before she genuinely cared about others, lapis took a while to trust anyone and then had a long arc about abusive relationships and her feelings of guilt, etc. There was a bit of prior development of the diamonds, but only a little, so needing to cram all of that into two episodes was unfortunate. With the rushed ending they were forced into I think it's probably about the best version that could have been done, but I would love to see what it could have been without CN canceling the show.

I don't put any of the blame for that on Sugar or the show though. In the grand scheme of things it doesn't take away from how amazing the entire show was, and not capitulating on the wedding episode was a lot more important than being able to make the finale a little more narratively satisfying.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 days ago

Yes exactly. Without writing too much more, I'll just say I wish it had been done a bit different, and there's no shame in critiquing a finished product for what it is (within reason. I'm not a huge fandom person so I don't really know how toxic this all got for some people). It's still quite good.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

oh my god. Sorry but I ain’t reading that shit

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 days ago

Yeah. Valid. I'm just going to leave it up and take my downvotes.
