I am having trouble with the absence of centralized communities. For many many topics communities seem to exist on multiple instances and that splits up the user base and discussions it seems. I get that it is an inherent part of the design, but it hurts my experience.

Also the number of users seems to be too low still to create a lively environment. I hope that changes but so far the number of posts and comments on those posts seems a bit low compared to what I was used to.

Having said all that, I love the app (I am using voyager) and the general vibe of the people on here. Let’s hope on more users and a continued constructive community!

What topics are you interested in? Usually there is a more active community, and then smaller ones.

For instance for movies:

https://lemmyverse.net/communities?query=movies&order=active can help to discover those, usually weekly or monthly active users is a good metric.

This post can help as well: https://lemm.ee/post/57443076

A few other examples where one community become "the one"

I am happy I joined (in past 14 days or so). So far I like it a lot. In the past I tried lemmy and was confused how it works. Somehow I thought when I post something on mastodon it can also be targeted to lemmy (posts or replies), but I think I largely misunderstood and that put me off for some time. But when I found out about this sublemmy I had to try again and this time with success!

I'm confused about this too, I've subscribed to the hashtag #buyeuropean on mastodon and I see posts from this community here over there? 🤔

Pretty cool, good to see we have an alternative to reddit.

Loving it so far! I've also found great replacements for all the US software I've been using. Should have done that a long time ago, there are actually amazing non fascist alternatives!

Why is this buyeuropean on feddit.uk but it has an EU flag? I feel like somebody has yet to learn about a major political event that happened in the last few years.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago

There's [email protected] on an Estonian server without a flag, but it's mostly memes

Thanks. What could be the reason some reply comments arent loading? Is it some kind of Lemmy bug?

I was looking for reddit alternatives before and didn't pull through. Now that I did (first hour), I dont see why anyone wouldn't "migrate".

Ah, and I'm using "eternity". Reminds me of the old days before reddit turned facebook.

Looking for some good software recommendations, I like what I'm seeing here.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

what Software do you want?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 days ago

Switched to LibreOffice, and Betterbird for Mail. Works well so far. Using Vivaldi as a browser, that's a European project but with a modified Chrome core as far as I understand, the built-in AdBlocker works fine in combination with NoScript, even on mobile. Trying out Linux Mint so I can switch the OS when Windows 10 loses support later this year.

I'm surprised how quickly I've gotten used to it! I honestly really like the mobile app and it's gestures, as well as the customizability.

Although I don't think I'll be completely quitting reddit just yet, as some of my more niche interests don't have communities here yet.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Have you considered creating new communities for your niche interests? You might just find like-minded people here. :)

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 hours ago (1 children)

I would but I simply don't have the time or motivation to moderate and manage a community

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 hours ago

Well here's the thing, if no one shows up then there's nothing to moderate, and if people show up you can make one or several of moderators. ;) But you'll never find out unless you create a community.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago

That's fair, most of people still use Reddit for niche interests
