Finnish Jolla makes their C2 phone and it comes with Sailfish OS: https://shop.jolla.com/

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

Wow... To escape Russia's investors due to the Ukrainian war, the Jolla initial company filed for bankruptcy. They really tried tu cut their ties with Russia!

Had my Fairphone 3 over 5 years now, and I dropped it a few hundred times ago - only equipped with the small "bumper" (a rubber ring around the edges). Only in the end I noticed worse reception - I guess some of the antenna contacts inside came lose. BUT you can totally disassemble the phone yourself and fix that - you only need a normal screwdriver. I upgraded to my Fairphone 5 a few days now - and I'm totally happy with it! Better camera, more storage and better fingerprint sensor.

Plus, they'll support your phone with updates for 8 years, I think.

Gigaset (yes, they've got smartphones, too)

[–] [email protected] 13 points 2 months ago (2 children)

There is also Gigaset who claim that their smartphones are "Made in Germany" but I am not entirely sure to what exactly this covers.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Based on the specs, seems it's only assembled in Germany with exception of a few parts like the battery.

It also seems to use standard Android with Google Play though.

If it does, then Fairphone would be a better option, or a phone offering from Murena perhaps too since that comes with /e/os

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Gigaset is manufacturing in Germany afaik, but it is a Chinese-owned company. The phone runs on Android or Ubuntu Touch.

You may consider to buy a Gigaset pre-installed with UT or VollaOS (an Android-compatible OS by Volla Phone) at https://volla.online/ (Volla uses Gigaset phones).

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

Ah, I was confused by that. I thought Volla used their own manufacturer.

I thought VollaOS was just a custom rom? I noticed they use Ubuntu Touch and was surprised it was still alive. I thought Postmarket OS was the successor to it

Another vote here for HMD. I’m a Finn so totally biased but I recommend checking them out.

[–] [email protected] 36 points 2 months ago (2 children)

In addition to Fairphone and Shiftphone, there is also Volla Phone.

Their self description: "Volla Systeme is an independent, German manufacturer of smartphones, optionally with its own Android operating system Volla OS or the mobile Linux distribution Ubuntu Touch. Volla OS is characterized by uncompromising data protection and a uniquely intelligent operating concept."

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

Volla sells rebranded Gigaset with custom operating systems (Ubuntu Touch/VollaOS (degoogled android)). They don't manufacture themselves.

I never heard of them before and just looked around for a bit but I couldn't find any reviews of their current phones so far. If anybody has more information or wants to share personal experiences, I'd be interested.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

At gnulinux.ch there were some articles / reviews about Volla (but in German): https://gnulinux.ch/artikelindex?search=Volla

In the comments of these articles you can also find some experience reports.

There are phones designed and assembled in the EU, but materials and chip fab in EU is negligible.

~~Or [email protected] if you want to make sure they adhere to EU laws.~~

Lol, never mind, that's where you posted it in the first place. Nice to see that the community is already gaining traction. :P

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

The single mod of the community we are in is missing. [email protected] has a lot of active mods, and more activity overall.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

That might be, but it is not specific to the EU, and therefore not relevant to those of us looking for EU goods.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

There is no rule in the sidebar stating that [email protected] is limited to the EU

European-made

European market

By that definition, is Norway included?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Fine, in that case i propose we make another community for those of us who want EU goods, so we don't confuse them with european goods. Happy?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Not really. One community would be better than two, especially with how close they are.

The UK left the EU, but aren't they still better allies than Trump-US at the moment? Is it better to get spend money in an iPhone or get a Nothing Phone? Switzerland is next door, even if one of the Proton board members acts suspiciously lately, wouldn't you recommend people to use Proton rather than Gmail?

The /r/BuyfromEU subreddit allows European in the general terms, Switzerland, UK and Norway included. It seems more reasonable to use a similar definition.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I actually agree with you that, the EU/Europe destination doesn't matter that much, but my pedantic side have to point out that "Europe" technically also include Belarus and a big chunk of Russia.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Im not very appreciative of your attempts to trap me using loaded questions. When have I ever mentioned America? I'm pretty sure that I have only ever argued for a EU-only community, and not a "EU+everyone except other non-EU european countries" community. Are european countries favorable compared to the USA? Of course they are! But that's not what I'm arguing in the first place, so please let's keep on topic.

Looking at this comms name, I'm rather sure that the rules are meant to be european (union), which, sadly, might be an error similar to those from the USA wrongfully calling their country "America".

Regarding CM's online status, I checked that they: made the account, made a few posts, made the comm, and the went offline. Likely someone testing out the waters and unlikely to return. In other words: This community does indeed have a dark future and should be evacuated.

Now, regarding why I'd want a EU-only community which does not encompass the UK, Norway, Switzerland, etc.: I want goods that I know adhere to EU standards (not russian, not Norwegian, not UK), and/or which are shipped from inside the EU (eg. not russian, not Norwegian, not UK, not even the USA (???)) so I don't have to pay that stupid import handling fee of 25€ for my 2€ pack of chinese assorted transistors shipped from the UK.

In other words: I'm not attacking the existential rights of the 'buyeuropean' community - I think that community is great when looking for european goods - but I'm instead looking for a community specific to the EU. Again, not a community for EU+USA, not a "russia and friends", not a "buyworldwide", but a "buyfromEU".

At last I'd like to apologize, for if this didn't make my stance clear, then I'm unsure how to convey it to you.

It comes down to the question of "how much niche communities can we afford to have on Lemmy"

You could create that community you are describing now, but the overlap would be so important with [email protected] that people would probably prefer to consolidate them.

See this post on that exact topic: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/38835652

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Boys... stay on topic or get a room 🥹.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

We're probably done

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

Right, please excuse us.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

I've already read and voted on that post. It did give me a rather negative view of the buyeuropean mods, but i still think their work is commendable. If nothing else, then at least for running the community.
