"Liberals are now finding out..."

"Liberals are starting to understand..."

"Liberals are finally waking up to the fact..."

Fuck anyone who talks like this. The left has been awake and aware of what's going on for a LONG fucking time now. We are also unfortunately aware that we are essentially powerless to stop it. Don't fucking pretend like liberals were blindsided by any of this or had their head in the sand. We saw this coming from a long ways away at a glacial pace and tried our damnedest to inform people and take action. We just happen to also be tied to a stake and gagged, so it's not been very effective.

Elite privilege is very much in play I'm afraid.

While this is true, BadEmpanada isn't the person to take this from. His whole shtick is defending authoritarian regimes, calling for systemic murder of all who he deems "colonizers" (while he himself would be considered one by his rules).

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago

It's not even true, people have known about and hated the imperialism shit the entire time, it just wasn't the main focus of mainstream news. It's just another dumbass strawman argument trying to further fracture the left.

My understanding is that he moved to a different place legally following the policies set in place by the government that ostensibly represents the people there. Colonizers generally do not ask permission to settle a place and they do so in mass through a coordinated effort and do not try to integrate into the local community. He's from Australia, a place that had an indigenous population before it was colonized that still lives there, so moving from there to a place that he had to request permission from seems kinda, not like colonizing? Though I believe he has referred to himself as a colonizer regardless. Also, he seems to take issue with almost every government, which people interpret as him defending authoritarians. Taking issue with the US or France or whatever does not equate to defending authoritarian regimes. He has some takes I don't agree with, but he seems to be pretty internally consistent and he behaves according to his beliefs.

But this is not true. The US has pursued a relentless drive toward worldwide free trade since WWII, which accelerated after 1980. The US maintains a low- to no-tariff relationship with most countries this guy refers to as "third world nations." The US has done plenty bad things to some of those countries over the past century, but tariffs aren't one of them.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The US has routinely abused their position in the global market to disenfranchise and abuse nations that get on their bad side, wtf are you talking about

[–] [email protected] 0 points 23 hours ago

I'm talking about tariffs

The myth of the just world police has been lost... finally.

Shame it's going to cause more pain.

Very quick edit: US is a historical criminal racket fucking up their 'non-influencial' neighbours.

I agree, I think we are witnessing the global influence leader transition from the US to China. All they had to do was provide investments in lower income countries and stability at the national leadership level. The US did the rest by exploiting those same lower income countries for centuries and not providing a stable foreign policy.

You make it sound as if China did something good to other countries with their "help". They showed their cards already too, offering money with no moral obligations attached (which pleased some regimes) but raging interest rates and untold actions (the new jobs weren't for the locals, but chinese citizens send abroad). When the loan couldn't be paid back China offered "deals" effectively annexing the shiny new harbour or whatever infrastructure there was. Many countries got fucked over that way by them as well, especially African ones. Some of them silently came back to European nations for their aid plans with those pesky human right requirements (and, of course, partial economical colonization). Meanwhile China got huge internal struggles, both financially and socially (they just suppress coverage about it).

Don't underestimate India either. While they seem to not meddle as much in other countries, they too grow very strong very quickly, and they're not very fond of either China or the US. And then there's Europe with high amounts of soft power as well.

tl;dr Right now it's hard to say how the future will look like. Our western media is just all about "China China China" right now.

Yeah, to be born in the country that is literally responsible for the existence of the term "banana republic" is...not great.

Man, I sure have been to a lot of protests over something american liberals aren't supposed to have noticed up until now...

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago

I'm guessing most of those were not organized by liberals, at least not in the way that OP meant.

The US has been fucking with Canada for a long time before Trump.

We want to get rid of daylight savings time but won't unless Americans follow suit.

The US has literally tried to tunnel underground to steal fresh water from Canada.

American administrations have been notoriously unfriendly to NDP governments and made threats when Saskatchewan elected a far left party, claiming Canada was leaning too far into socialism.

American fuckery (and a shitty PM) killed our aviation industry, leading to a reliance on the states to purchase military aircraft.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

That is covert sabotage. Which gets largely unnoticed.

Outright economic blackmail to get concessions was something reserved for the neo-colonies.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

All that (except daylight savings) and more happened before I was born and I knew about it before graduating highschool. "Covert" is different from "Most Americans don't know."

Years ago, you guys were gonna decriminalize marijuana, and our government went completely ape shit.

[–] [email protected] 24 points 1 day ago (1 children)

And then we legalized it. Somehow society didn’t crumble.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Only a matter of time until the Trumpet is banning that again too because one of the christofascists whispering in his ear thinks society is crumbling.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago

They just don’t like anything that can lead to true freedom which is - people being ok with themselves. Can’t sell you a product if you’re ok with yourself.
