Plug one side of the cable on the left of the box, the other side on the right, press the button and whichever light doesn't come on means that part of the cable is faulty. I learned a lot from my bad decisions :)

Back in my desk tech days, one of the most useful cable testers I ever used had a “hold” mode. The lights would only come on if the circuit was interrupted. And then they would stay on until I hit a reset button. It made testing cables much more reliable, because it allowed me to find all of the cables that would randomly pop and crackle when wiggled juuuuuust right.

I’d plug both ends in, and shake the hell out of the cable. If I saw any lights, I knew the cable would crackle at some point because it had a break somewhere in the middle. And the fact that the light stayed on meant I didn’t need to worry about missing a tiny flicker (which would sound like a big pop when the cable was in use)… If it disconnected, it was stuck on until I reset it.

Now that's MUCH more useful than what I made!

I made this one with a button you have to press to check the cable, for no real good reason, and I now realize that it actually makes it less practical to use ^^

I don't think it should take much more components to give it that hold mode.

I might give it another go, and drop the useless XLR sockets while I'm at it.

Yeah I picked it for style, then regretted it when building the project when I remembered that aluminium is conductive (duh...),
which meant that all the grounds were connected together...

Which is not what I needed and I had to get creative to insulate them from eachother (you can see it a little on the last pic, I coated every hole for the connectors on the right side with nail polish).

In the end it was worth it though, I love the finished look :)
