Unpopular Opinion
Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!
How voting works:
Vote the opposite of the norm.
If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.
Guidelines:
Tag your post, if possible (not required)
- If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
- If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].
Rules:
1. NO POLITICS
Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.
2. Be civil.
Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.
3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.
Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.
4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...
Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.
5. No trolling.
This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.
Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

You do realize those are voluntary participants right?
So were all the participants in squid game.
That's quite the escalation. Mr Beast isn't making people kill each other.
Yeah but one of the big themes is that a lot of the time even when these people technically do have the choice to refuse, circumstances often make it so they can't. While it's nowhere near as extreme, the underlying motivations are the same
They did not volunteer for the science, they volunteered for the money.
There is a reason why the voluntary sale of organs is illegal worldwide, and why scientific studies are subject to strict ethical regulations to prevent individuals from participating in activities that could harm them.
I will say that a surprising amount of people in his earlier videos were basically his team. If anything Mr Beast shines a light on what entertains us rather than him.
It can be both.
True, but they agree to do it because they need money. It’s like Squid Game but less extreme (I actually never saw squid game so maybe that’s a bad analogy). The system has failed these people (presumably) and he exploits their need for money in order to make himself look good and raise awareness of his brand so he can make more money too. At least I assume that’s OP’s point
Well I don't think any participant in a MrBeast challenge has ever been shot in the head so I'd say it's a pretty bad analogy.
Analogy: a comparison of 2 identical events.
Brilliant
The differences between these two is extreme enough to merit ridicule.
I do not like giveaways because most of them are just tax-write-offs.
However, if someone has money, it is theirs to decide how to use. And if someone else is being helped and not harmed, then it's a good thing.
I do not know of anyone being harmed by MrBeast.
But I do know of people and animals benefitting from his generousness.
Being embarrassed is not the same as physical injury.
Much like participation in MrBeast videos is not the same as participation in Squid Game.
Lmao, the effort you spent in responding to this thread is enough to merit ridicule. It's especially sad considering the content you wrote with that effort.
