I have been contemplating this a lot:

Consider the following fictitiois scenario: A person wants to bring themselves into a very dangerous and unnecessary situation. Such as making themselves dependent on the goodwill of companies.

Is it allowed to let that person make that choice about themselves? Would it be ethical to choose self-determination over safety?

I'm asking because the impression i get is that so many people vote against their own best interests, by voting against social security nets and the likes. Is it ethical to let people make that choice?

I think self-determination is a high good, and if somebody wants to bring themselves into danger, they should be allowed to do so. But people must have a realistic chance to not get dragged into other people's bad choices.
