MODERATORS

Good day all! I'm starting up a Peertube instance that'll be moderated for folks, hopefully backed by donations through my nonprofit org BT Free. I'm going to work on setting up Peertube next week. But I was thinking of setting up a moderated index.

Looking at the following link, in the "PeerTube auto follow & Global Search" section: https://framagit.org/framasoft/peertube/instances-peertube

It seems I can just create a file, put that code in there, set the hosts I want, and then any Peertube can go to Admin - Settings - Configuration - Basic - Search Index URL - and then put in https://ptindex.btfee.org/ . Is this correct?

If so, does anyone know if Peertube can refresh it's host list or if it refreshes on a timer or something?

I'll update if I find out the answer as well.

EDIT: Ok so already realized there's a "Search Index URL" under the "Enable global search" for managing what servers you users can search on. Then there's also a "Index URL" under the "Automatically follow instances of a public index" which you can follow. Awesome. I have it there, but not updated ... yet?

So, besides the search index/instance index following confusion, you got it more or less right, at least as far as my understanding goes. The concept of that system of being able to choose an index to automatically follow was to make it so moderated and mutually-trusting platforms can interconnect in a self-determined way and publish lists of trusted platforms.

Which, btw, I think many would be super happy for - currently, I don't know of any index like that myself. (Maybe there are some, but if so, not very publicly known/advertised). You basically only get the "official" index, which is only moderated after the fact and all over the place. I'd definitely be up for using and promoting any auto-follow index that's more directly moderated with my instance. (I followed the official one at first to get the bulk of my follows, but it became too much of a pain to moderate).

Also, just in general: Good luck with your instance going forward - and thank you for contributing to the Fediverse! :)

Quick P.S.: I think especially for more technical questions, also cross-posting to [email protected] in addition to here is a great idea. That comm seems to have developed to be a more focused space with less video promotions and better long-term discussion not getting buried by video links.

Thank you for the info. I've unfollowed everyone and set my instance to pull from ptindex.btfree.org and it's not autofollowing yet. So either I messed something up or it's on a timer. I have a question into the Matrix channel. Gonna let it go a few days, then next week I'll dig into it more and open a git question about it. I'll definitely update here what I find out! Thank you!

And great idea about cross posting. I always forget about that, not used to this style. :-)

Unless things have changed since back then, it does indeed seem to be on a timer, check the dev's answer here: https://framacolibri.org/t/cant-automatically-follow-instances-of-the-public-index/8138

I wondered the same when I first followed the "official" index, and it started to follow isntances eventually.

AH! "You need to wait 24 hours after a peertube restart to see a peertube auto follow." And I just restarted it yesterday thinking a restart would force an auto follow job. :-D

Thank you SO MUCH! :-) I'll update later today then! EXCITING! :-D
