Yep. The only thing I want to do on youtube is a niche eco-Marxism podcast without any care for viewership. The moment you blow up into Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't though, you have to play a guy. Everyone on Well There's Your Problem has to be their character for the weird parasocial relationships their audience has. You have to have trademark phrases and a staged production because your audience doesn't want to learn unless neuron-activation. There's drama and multiple layers of parasites who feed on it, each of them driving more negative traffic to your channel to boost their own. And then the algorithm arbitrarily punishes you if you don't show it your face making a cartoon reaction to your video about a cholera epidemic.

The moment you have to become a cartoon that sells products which only further alienate your viewers, youtube is evil. There's very little room for channels that don't participate in an evil feedback loop which dehumanises them.

The ideal youtube channel is Clickspring. He's put out two videos so far this year, both about making complex clockwork parts using a handmade bronze age bow lathe. He's never shown his face or taken a sponsor spot, and every video is absolutely beautiful.
