His mother's family is Jewish, but he didn't know that until he was already grown up. He was raised as a Catholic and made a career out of being an annoying atheist. So he's technically half Jewish but he only uses that for political purposes.

If you grew up your whole life without knowing you are Jewish, I’m sorry you are not Jewish
I read a great little indigenous anarchist zine that made a similar point: if you just found out you're 1/32 Anishinaabe and this came as a big shock or revelation, it's very inappropriate to suddenly claim it as an identity. You have no cultural connection and have never been embedded in the community. You probably don't even know anyone who does!
I agree completely about white people stealing indigenous valor, or whites in general.
But what about the many African Americans who don't grow up knowing their African roots because of slavery. Is it wrong if they take a DNA test and figure out they're part Nigerian and embrace that culture as an adult? I'm not debate bro-ing you, it's just a food for thought.
