World News
A community for discussing events around the World
Rules:
-
Rule 1: posts have the following requirements:
- Post news articles only
- Video links are NOT articles and will be removed.
- Title must match the article headline
- Not United States Internal News
- Recent (Past 30 Days)
- Screenshots/links to other social media sites (Twitter/X/Facebook/Youtube/reddit, etc.) are explicitly forbidden, as are link shorteners.
-
Rule 2: Do not copy the entire article into your post. The key points in 1-2 paragraphs is allowed (even encouraged!), but large segments of articles posted in the body will result in the post being removed. If you have to stop and think "Is this fair use?", it probably isn't. Archive links, especially the ones created on link submission, are absolutely allowed but those that avoid paywalls are not.
-
Rule 3: Opinions articles, or Articles based on misinformation/propaganda may be removed. Sources that have a Low or Very Low factual reporting rating or MBFC Credibility Rating may be removed.
-
Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, anti-religious, or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.
-
Posts and comments must abide by the lemmy.world terms of service UPDATED AS OF 10/19
-
Rule 5: Keep it civil. It's OK to say the subject of an article is behaving like a (pejorative, pejorative). It's NOT OK to say another USER is (pejorative). Strong language is fine, just not directed at other members. Engage in good-faith and with respect! This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban.
Similarly, if you see posts along these lines, do not engage. Report them, block them, and live a happier life than they do. We see too many slapfights that boil down to "Mom! He's bugging me!" and "I'm not touching you!" Going forward, slapfights will result in removed comments and temp bans to cool off.
-
Rule 6: Memes, spam, other low effort posting, reposts, misinformation, advocating violence, off-topic, trolling, offensive, regarding the moderators or meta in content may be removed at any time.
-
Rule 7: We didn't USED to need a rule about how many posts one could make in a day, then someone posted NINETEEN articles in a single day. Not comments, FULL ARTICLES. If you're posting more than say, 10 or so, consider going outside and touching grass. We reserve the right to limit over-posting so a single user does not dominate the front page.
We ask that the users report any comment or post that violate the rules, to use critical thinking when reading, posting or commenting. Users that post off-topic spam, advocate violence, have multiple comments or posts removed, weaponize reports or violate the code of conduct will be banned.
All posts and comments will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This means that some content that violates the rules may be allowed, while other content that does not violate the rules may be removed. The moderators retain the right to remove any content and ban users.

voting is not harm reduction
it's a tiny itsy bitsy miniscule aspect of it
no, harm reduction is recognizing the harm is going to come, and mitigating the consequences. it's not voting for someone who might only cause some harm.
What have you done to mitigate the consequences?
Trained two people in the use of firearms yesterday. Sunday, I hosted first aid training for a dozen people.
Next week, a general assembly for my block is happening, to plan gardens.
What are you doing or have done to actually reduce harm?
So absolutely nothing that will stop the genocide in Palestine.
What I have done is spend hours of my time making calls, writing emails and going directly to the offices of politicians to demand they do something.
But sure, I haven't trained anyone not in Palestine how to use firearms or do first-aid training because those are 100% irrelevant.
Oh, mitigate things in Palestine?
I send regular donations to groups there for aid.
What beyond that, do you suggest? Voting for a dem wouldn't have changed things for them. Neither do phone calls.
Intried the phone call route, letters, etc. I was told by my dem reps, that it's important for the US to maintain a strong security presence there, to protect Israelis.
"They told me something discouraging, so I gave up" is not the excuse you think it is.
But congratulations on deciding the solution is capitalism. Both very American of you.
Bruh, I oppose capitalism...
You clearly don't. You think money will fix genocide.
What do you suggest I do, other than that?
No matter how I voted, they'd be getting genocided... so, I sent money for relief aid. That's apparently wrong, that I put my money where my mouth is, and vote with my dollars like ya'll liberals say to do..
So what else should I do?
I suggest you stop lying about me, first of all. Then maybe we can go on to suggesting what you can do about Palestinian genocide. But I'm guessing the former is not going to stop.
I get it. Your only solution to everything is just vote. And then it ends there.
no, they also beg politicians to do something , and run away, and shit on solidarity efforts
Another lie.
that's not what they said
I asked them what they are doing to help stop genocide, they said giving groups money. So yeah, it is.
I may be stupid, but I'm not illiterate.
you are engaging in bad faith re-fucking-ported
That's literally what they said, but okay. Go ahead and report me for it.
it's not what they said. it's a bad faith interpretation
I'm pretty sure only I get to decide whether or not my interpretation is "bad faith," and since they are now telling as many lies as possible about me in this post (claiming I call people, including them, idiots, claiming I think voting is the only thing to do, claiming I think people should "vote blue no matter who," all easily disproven), maybe I'm not the one acting in bad faith her.
the mods and admins also get to decide. your tu quoque isn't a defense, either.
It's sure a defense of why you've decided to focus on me and not the person who is clearly trolling. But sure, I'm the real problem here.
And you seriously reported me to the admins too? You think I'm violating Lemmy's ToS somehow? Please quote the part of the ToS I'm violating.
I'm talking to you because you responded to me. anyone can read the thread. you claim they're trolling but I woke up to a message from you demanding to know what I'm doing to help with harm reduction. and when I clicked into the threead you were shitting on someone who is actually helping with harm reduction.
I know who the troll is.
Accusing people of bad faith seems to be something you greatly enjoy doing:
https://lemmy.world/search?q=bad+faith&type=All&listingType=All&creatorId=12111005&page=1&sort=TopAll
Also, don't you think maybe you should consider what I'm actually helping with? Or does it not count when I do it? Because that would seem like "bad faith" to me.
Now- what part of the ToS did I volate?
no. it's irrelevant to whether you're participating in this conversation productively. you're not. you're derailing.
I'm absolutely right about each of the times I've pointed out bad faith engagement.
You still haven't told me what part of the ToS I have violated despite implying you have contacted the admins.
That seems like "bad faith engagement" to me.
I don't get to determine that. it's up to mods and admins.
So you report people for violating rules even if you don't actually know what those rules are?
That definitely sounds like bad faith. And trolling. And a headache for the admin.
this definitely sounds like trolling.
Then you are definitely violating the rules of this community right now:
But I won't report you for it, I just think the irony is very amusing.
you don't seem to know what capitalism is
Throwing money at a problem in order to solve it is peak capitalism, but do tell me how it fits in a non-capitalist system. This should be good.
peak capitalism is extracting profit from others labor, like being a landlord.
I'm an insurrectionist, I just know my enemy.
Huh. And all this time I thought capitalism was multifaceted and not so simple that you could sum it up in one sentence, which is why there are multi-volume works dedicated to it.
But you're the economist here.
yes. and for 20 minutes to 3 hours on election day that was casting a ballot. like i said. it's a teeny tiny itsy bitsy aspect. it's not everything, but in a lot of ways if you can't bring yourself to even inconvenience yourself that little bit…
casting a ballot is not harm reduction
we're talking in circles. today is a big day for me. i suggest instead of responding to me when you're completely entrenched into your way of thought you spend some time today with some other marginalized people and help them out. i'm done with this conversation. it's clear you're the type of anarchist from David Rovics' "i'm a better anarchist than you"
I hope you learn what harm reduction is someday
ooof. David Rovics platforms Nazis. I'm a way better anarchist than him.
well that sucks to hear. thanks for the heads up on that. reading about it it looks like he fell down the crunchy to alt right pipeline. moreover the ignorant shit he's pushing is particularly hurtful since it promotes a super basic misunderstanding of the jewish identity that would be real easy to dispel if he bothered listening to a jewish leftist instead of digging his heels in. guess he's just another in a long line of people who talked some sense, got famous, and then were corrupted by the miniscule amount of power that comes with any amount of fame. it'll be a bummer when jesse welles falls down that path i guess
