His "little shelter" is, together with Larry Ellison, essentially the entire island of Lanai. It has a 7-mile-wide moat separating it from the higher-populated parts of Hawaii, let alone the US mainland.
... Did they buy basically all of Lanai, as well?

Looks like the imagery in this area has not been updated since 2019.
Not sure exactly where the property lines are, but I'm fairly sure I've got the main area in the picture here, matches all the details in the WIRED article.
You're right; I was mistaken about which island Zuckerberg's property is on.
