Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

US and other Nato countries should not bother with protecting merchant ships attacked in the Red sea. The shipping companies have to rely on the navies of their flag states for protection. The 10 largest flag states for shipping are:

Panama, Liberia, Marshall Islands, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malta, Bahamas, China, Greece, Japan

Hong Kong is now China. But there is still an independent shipping tax haven there. The shipping companies avoiding taxes in western countries does not deserve protection from the same countries.

They can get a return of the tax money by letting the mentionee countries send their navies. Greece is a NATO country, so NATO can participate to some degree with support to the flag state navies.

*Guess this was a popular opinion.

Right idea , wrong solution maybe ?

Everything you’ve said about flags of convenience is true. In addition, it helps the shipper circumvent labour laws and pay proper wages.

On the other hand, I can’t really support putting those ships at risk and the the lives of the people on them. The west maintains expensive forces for reasons just such as this.

Plus, if we suddenly stop getting cheap shit by the boat load, the world grinds to a halt, literally.

So, good idea, wrong solution because the price of it is too high, given the dependencies in place .

Im actually a surprised how much this hot downvoted. Its either incredible popular, or this place is a carbon copy of reddit where only popular opinions get upvotes.

Unpopular opinion: Trump is not suited as president.

I'm not who you're replying to, and I certainly haven't downvoted you. I don't downvote people for having a different opinion. Downvotes are for posts that actively poison conversation or where posters are treating others poorly.

However, your cited problem and suggested solution appear to be lacking in larger understandings of geopolitics and global commerce.
