30 Rock is really excellent! OTOH I watched Community throughout and I’m still waiting for the good jokes.
I liked them both pretty well but their styles are different so I could see a good chunk of people being fans of one but not the other.
One of my favourite gags from Community. It follows a similarly layered structure to the Liz and Jenna at improv joke:
Britta (doing a voice): "Slow news day"
Jeff: "That's your Johnny Carson impression?"
Britta (confused): "Jon Stewart"
My remark was purposefully hyperbolic. I did have a laugh every few episodes, maybe around one per episode on average.
I don't get this joke though. Really just whoosh.
It's possible that Community is excessively geared towards USA audiences, and since I'm not from there I just missed pretty much every joke for not having the proper context!
The joke is that Britta didn't realize that Jon Stewart's Carson impression is an impression, which fits with her character of being a bit of a poser who doesn't understand how the world works.
Anyway yeah a lot of the jokes lean on Dan Harmon's deep pop culture references, many of which are based on North American media.
