What is a Tankie?

Alternatively, a detailed blog post about Tankies.

(caution of biased source)

Basic Rules:

Sh.itjust.works Instance rules apply! If you are from other instances, please be mindful of the rules. — Basically, don't be a dick.

Hate-Speech — You should be familiar with this one already; practically all instances have the same rules on hate speech.

Apologia(Using the Modern terminology for Apologia) No Defending, Denying, Justifying, Bolstering, or Differentiating authoritarian acts or endeavours, whether be a Pro-CCP viewpoint, Stalinism, Islamic Terrorism or any variation of Tankie Ideology.

Revisionism — No downplaying or denying atrocities past and present. Calling Tankies shills, foreign/federal agents, or bots also falls under this rule. Extremists exist. They are real. Do not call them shills or fake users as it handwaves their extremism.

Tankies can explain their views but may be criticised or attacked for them. Any slight infraction on the rules above will immediately earn a warning and possibly a ban.

Off-topic Discussion — Do not discuss unrelated topics to the point of derailing the thread. Stay focused on the direct content of the post as opposed to arguing.

You'll be warned if you're violating the instance and community rules. Continuing poor behaviour after being warned will result in a ban or removal of your comments. Bans typically only last 24 hours, but each subsequent infraction will double the amount. Depending on the content, the ban time may be increased. You may request an unban at any time.

For a software programmer working out of Toronto, he sure has some interesting perspectives on Maoism.

Tankie are the kind of people who will criticise capitalism while indulge in it.

Lats I got his IP it wasn't in Canada...

(Idiot clicked a tracking link)

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago

Do not post about IPs

Almost every IP now is meaningless

mastadon: https://mas.to/@yogthos

which leads to..

his pixelfed: https://pixelfed.social/Yogthos

which leads to..

his github: https://github.com/yogthos

which says Toronto, and Lumanu,

which leads to his employer's glassdoor

https://www.glassdoor.com/Salary/Lumanu-Software-Engineer-Salaries-E3708312_D_KO7,24.htm

He's a well paid software engineer working out of Toronto. The whole "marxist" thing is just schtict.

I think tankies say some pretty stupid shit too, but you shouldn't doxx people. I think the link to their presumed employer is a step too far.

Also, being a "well-paid software engineer"and a Marxist is only contradictory if you don't understand what Marxism is. Unless you are a part of the bourgeois (being well-paid is not the same thing), being a Marxist is a perfectly reasonable position to have.

The real problem is that many of the """Marxists""" on this site seem to be more interested in American Diabolism and doing apologia for a different set of genocides (the few that America opposes).

Regardless, it's bad to doxx people.

thank you for calling them out

Though I am curious about your thoughts on Marxism as every theory has many takes and interpretations. I'm of the opinion that simply having exuberant wealth is still exploitation, no matter how righteous you try to be with it.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I'm no marxist, but aren't they somewhat their ideology's target demographic?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

aren’t they somewhat their ideology’s target demographic?

Huh?

Toronto based software engineers are the target demographic of Marxists? Or Marxists are the target demographic of Toronto based software engineers?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago

Maybe they mean engineers in general? Engineers tend to be over-represented in cults, because "Smart people believe weird things because they are skilled at defending beliefs they arrived at for non-smart reasons."

Interesting info, thanks so he does live in canada.

Why is he using a privat VPN to Belarus then? (See my replay to goat)

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Lots of people use VPNs. He's pretty tech savvy. Maybe its part of the cosplay.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago

I'm using a VPN as well, technically even two.

It being part of the cosplay could be a good explanation for it being to Belarus, a normal user routs over at max 3 countries when not wanting to access Geo blocked content due to speed.

That his IP address was geolocatable to Belarus and that it wasn't a Tor node or known VPN exit so its likely he was actually there or used a private VPN to a country that is less free think than Russia itself. Both questionable.

There are services that put a tracking into a link to get information on the PC it was opened on. And some less public ones can do that with a inbound Image without need to click. Lemmy doesn't have protection against that stuff. And most don't block these services on DNS Level (wich is the last defense line for such a thing when you don't have a physical firewall standing around that might block the network from Sending a reply to the service)

Here is a very obvious looking example Attention, the link will track you when pressed https://imagehub.fun/8TVSAR.png this is a example of how it can look like.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Lemmy doesn't have protection no, but most routers and ISPs do.

Regardless I'm deleting all mentions of this topic. Personal information and doxxing is not allowed at all, you will be perma'd if you try it

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Hey I didn't dox someone getting a public IP just gives a vague area. I didn't know the info provided by the other user was not publicly available.

Lemmy doesn't have protection no, but most routers and do.

Actually not that much, they communicate with a IP towards the outside and you can get that public IP, wich gives a vague area (as in next bigger city usually) and no, most routers don't have something like a killswitch that presents them from spilling the Private IP, that's one reason VPNs exist.

And the link was just a example of how it can look, If I wanted people to click on it I wouldn't have said "it will track you"

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I understand but I need to be thorough and broad. Best drop this particular topic

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Wait. What happened here? Did they use Lemmy available system info to effectively doxx someone? That needs to be communicated. I'm aware no where in the internet is private but if it's a vector a chatter can quickly spool up that needs to be discussed (elsewhere, just seeking confirmation from you here)

(I can take this to DMs with you if you like)

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It wasn't an issue with Lemmy system info. It's not a vector particular to Lemmy, it was something else.
