The Reich is looking to wrap up its war with the Soviet Union soon, German and Finnish officials said, capitalizing on the Luftwaffe attack on key military sites to look forward to an end to the fighting.
Germany expects to get through its list of geographical targets in the USSR in the coming days, which will create an opportunity to wrap up the fighting, Wehrmacht officials said. Still, the situation remains dynamic and a lot will depend on the Soviet response.
An unnamed source in the German High Command stated that the "backbone" of the socialist regime has been shattered, comparing the regime to "a rotten structure on the verge of collapse". It was reported this morning that a consensus had emerged amongst Axis officials that the Red Army's capacity to respond was substantially diminished, with many air assets destroyed before they could take off. The Volksfront Command has relaxed some measures in the days since the commencement of the offensive.
The feelings of German citizens appear mixed in comparison to the military assessment. One father in his 50s, showing us a photo of his two sons, explained that they are currently involved in efforts to liberate the Baltic states from Moscow's grip. "I am proud, because my sons are doing a great thing. We won't need to live in fear soon," he explained.
Such hopeful attitudes are not shared by all Germans. Elsewhere, reporters heard concerns. An older gentleman who served as an officer on the eastern front in the Great War expressed his worries: "Yes, we all want the socialists gone, and the Jews with them. But what will become of our Germany if this war doesn't end soon? Even the loss of one of our brave Aryan boys is a catastrophe - that means they cannot have more sons and daughters for the Reich."
