More than 80% of people convicted under Hong Kong’s National Security Law (NSL) have been wrongly criminalized and should never have been charged in the first place, according to new research by Amnesty International published on the fifth anniversary of the law being enacted.

The organization’s analysis of 255 individuals targeted under national security legislation in Hong Kong since 30 June 2020 also showed that bail was denied in almost 90% of cases where charges were brought, and that those denied bail were forced to spend an average of 11 months in detention before facing trial.

  • China’s government has erased Hong Kong’s freedoms since imposing the draconian National Security Law on June 30, 2020.
  • The Chinese government has largely dismantled freedoms of expression, association and assembly, free and fair elections, fair trial rights and judicial independence, and ended the city’s semi-democracy.
  • Other governments should press the Chinese government to end its repressive policies in Hong Kong by holding responsible officials to account.

The Chinese defense chief called for SCO countries – which, in addition to China and Russia, include India, Iran, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Belarus – to enhance coordination and “defend international fairness and justice” and “uphold global strategic stability.”

Attending countries “expressed a strong willingness to consolidate and develop military collaboration,” according to China’s official news agency Xinhua.

A day after Israel attacked Iran on Friday, a cargo plane took off from China. The next day, a second plane departed from a coastal city. Then on Monday, yet another departed, this time from Shanghai – three flights in three days.

Data showed that on each flight, the plane flew westward along northern China, crossing into Kazakhstan, then south into Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan – and then falling off the radar as it neared Iran.

To add to the mystery, flight plans indicated a final destination of Luxembourg, but the aircraft appeared to have never flown near European skies.

Aviation experts have noted that the type of plane used, Boeing 747 freighters, are commonly used for transporting military equipment and weapons, and hired to fly government contract orders.

Amid escalating unrest in Los Angeles triggered by sweeping immigration arrests, the Chinese Consulate General has issued a rare public safety advisory, urging Chinese nationals in the area to exercise heightened caution as the city faces an unprecedented federal military deployment.

In a message posted Monday on its official WeChat account, the consulate warned citizens to avoid risky areas and monitor the situation closely. "The Chinese Consulate General in Los Angeles reminds Chinese citizens in the Los Angeles area to closely monitor official announcements and media reports, remain highly aware of safety risks, strengthen personal precautions, stay away from gatherings, crowded or unsafe areas, and avoid traveling at night or alone," the statement read.

The warning follows a weekend of widespread protests that erupted after US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents detained at least 44 individuals during raids in downtown Los Angeles. The operation, reportedly expanded under pressure from senior Trump adviser Stephen Miller, has been criticized for indiscriminately targeting undocumented immigrants and, in some cases, even legal residents.
