There are many variations to Hans Christian Andersen's classic literary folktale "The Emperor's New Clothes," but most have the same basic plot points: A vain emperor is duped by two con men into buying clothes that don't exist. They trick him by saying that the non-existent fabric is actually visible, but only stupid and incompetent people can't see it. The emperor pretends that he can see the clothes, and then ordinary people follow his lead — whether because they believe him, or because they are simply afraid to state otherwise. It is only when a child blurts out that he is naked that the illusion is shattered.

Andersen was unfamiliar with the psychological concept known as malignant normality, but his tale captures it perfectly. The folktale also teaches an important lesson about standing by one's own common sense, even when social pressures are insurmountable, and remembering that confidence in your correctness is not enough on its own — particularly if those around you don't buy in too. And the idea — of a narcissist with power and/or popularity normalizing an "alternate reality" that is patently absurd — clearly has analogues in schoolyard politics, global politics, and everything in-between.

The concept of malignant normality, as explained by psychiatrist Dr. Robert Jay Lifton, is rooted in history — specifically, in our understanding of Nazi Germany. Lifton argued that many Nazi doctors weren't active ideologues, but were willing to send Jews to gas chambers because this was their job — even though they had taken a hippocratic oath.

The reality of institutionalized genocide, which had not seemed plausible to Germans only a dozen years earlier, had become a malignant normal. Not everyone had to buy into the ideas of Nazism, at least not in full. They simply had to live in a society where actions that would usually be considered atrocious are instead perceived as routine. In turn, while they didn't have to believe in Hitler's lies, they had to at least accept that a social order based around those lies could be legitimate. The moral system and fundamental political beliefs of millions of people had been radically altered — and all of it based on a narcissist's word.

I think we’ve lost the plot on disinformation. It’s not the attacks that are the problem. It’s the fact that too many Americans are willing to believe almost anything.

Ideally we’d reduce both the attacks and the vulnerability.

Of course it would be nice to have fewer attacks. Of course it would be nice to keep attacks from being used against higher numbers of vulnerable people. But ultimately the problem is the vulnerability itself.

Bad ideas are worse than bad code because they’re naturally contagious.

This is easier to see in the information security world. If you have a target that will run any code that it’s given, you cannot spend all of your energy making sure it doesn’t receive any code. Part of your plan has to be making sure it’s not so eager to do so. We call that patching.

It’s the same with people. We need to do more than control bad ideas; we need to patch our population against them.

Trade school doesn’t immunize against specious ideas.

For people, patching means education. And not the worker-prep kind of education where you learn how to be an obedient and productive office worker, but the kind that teaches the fundamentals of how things work—from physics to psychology, and from physiology to philosophy.

The long-lasting effects of concussion on the brain have become increasingly evident in recent years, highlighted by scientific research. Much of that research relates to traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) sustained during adult contact sports. When it comes to kids, though, there can be a fair bit of inadvertent head-bumping outside the sporting field.

New research led by the University of Tampere in Finland has investigated how a TBI sustained during childhood can negatively impact adult education.

CNN — The White House Correspondents’ Association is reversing course and canceling its plans to have comedian Amber Ruffin headline this year’s annual fundraising dinner in Washington, DC.

Instead, the association says it will celebrate the First Amendment and the free press.

“At this consequential moment for journalism, I want to ensure the focus is not on the politics of division but entirely on awarding our colleagues for their outstanding work and providing scholarship and mentorship to the next generation of journalists,” the association’s president, Eugene Daniels, wrote in a memo Saturday.

He said the association’s board voted unanimously to make the change, and did not immediately announce any new speakers.

The change is a tacit acknowledgment of the growing tensions between the association — which represents White House correspondents from dozens of news outlets — and President Donald Trump.

The event typically features comedians, who often use the forum to roast the guests, particularly those holding office. Presidents have traditionally given light-hearted remarks at the dinner. Last year’s dinner featured remarks by “Saturday Night Live” comedian Colin Jost and then-President Joe Biden, who took jabs at Trump and poked fun at his own age.

Trump skipped the annual dinner during his first four years in office and was expected to snub it again this April.

Some members of the association were privately concerned about the optics of a comedian who is harshly critical of Trump serving as the evening’s entertainment, televised and streamed live in prime time.

It was easy to predict the aftermath — denunciations from the right, free-speech defenses from the left — which is what happened when Trump was roasted by comedian Michelle Wolf in 2018.

The association has been under severe pressure this year as the Trump White House has banned The Associated Press from some events and taken control of press pool assignments, all part of a broader effort to assert power and clamp down on independent news coverage. White House correspondents aren’t exactly in a celebratory mood.

Meanwhile, conservative media outlets aligned with Trump have been planning their own alternative events around the April 26 dinner. Scores of media companies buy tables at the annual dinner, and many hold their own receptions surrounding the event.

People like to think the problem is the "Clowns in the Palace" of the White House.

People found it so amusing and entertaining that on the Internet people behaved like monsters and when they found someone weaker or confused, to mock and dehumanize with the force of powerful machines they joined in with the crowd and adopted the mob behaivors. But the force of technology lust for more banal mocking has elevated clowning dehumanization into all the monsters Stephen King described in his fiction horror works.

В чем заключалась наша идея с Дональдом Трампом? За четыре года и два дня.. необходимо было пробраться ко всем в мозг и захватить все возможные средства массового восприятия действительности. Обеспечить победу Дональда на выборах президента США. После чего создать политический союз между Соединенными Штатами, Францией, Россией (и ещё рядом других государств) и установить новый мировой порядок.

Четыре года и два дня - это с одной стороны очень большой срок, а с другой очень маленький. Наша идея была безумна, но реализуема. Для того, чтобы в этом во всем разобраться для начала нужно было "оцифровать" все возможные виды современного человека. Дональд решил пригласить для этой задачи - специальный научный отдел "Кембриджского университета".

Британские учёные из Cambridge Analytica предложили сделать из 5 тысяч существующих человеческих психотипов - "идеальный образ" возможного сторонника Трампа. Затем.. положить этот образ обратно на всё психотипы и таким образом подобрать универсальный ключик к любому и каждому.

Разработка в итоге обошлась Дональду Фредовичу в 5 миллионов долларов. Но! Он получил в свои руки - секретное супер-оружие. Кто занимался таргетированной рекламой.. поймёт, что это значит. Помните, сколько всего денег потратили фонды Клинтон и "их сторонники" на кампанию по всему миру? В 5 раз больше, чем Трамп.
