Morning people. Quick one. We live in a rental that's over 100 years old and hasn't had any investment since Harold Wilson took office.

We've noticed a few spots of mould around the windows and I'd like to know if there's anything we can do at the tenant level to combat this?

First ever post, so I hope this is structured OK and hello to all fellow Lemmy migrants! Anyway, here's my question: is there a UK News community? I've found world news and of course CasualUK, but it'd be great to have a community focused on genuinely important headlines of the days with a focus on my home nation. Am I missing something obvious or isn't there such a thing on Lemmy.world just yet? I'm still just fumbling my way around.

I'm assuming slum landlord, but if anyone's got any good experiences here I'd appreciate hearing them..

Magic erasers, baking soda? Any tips. You leave the kids unattended for thirty seconds and the hallway has turned into a damn Picasso.

I've put a bit of timber on but this is getting ridiculous. The only ones I've found that don't shrink in the wash are graphic tees from Qwertee and the like.

So, I was spacing out while waiting for my next class in college and had this idea and wanted to know what a British person would think of it. I wanted to make a T-Shirt with the outline of the Falkland Islands filled with the Union Jack, and on the top, or top-left corner, a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II smiling from Heaven casting down sunrays on the islands. I'm not trolling, I wanted to make something to piss off Argies and supporters alike.

Do you guys think its too late for me to play sunday league football even at the lowest level with some team if I am starting football at age 26?

I haven't played football since I was a kid but I am trying to get back into it now and have joined a local sunday league team. But I feel the others are much better than me.

And its not just because I feel that way, I honestly was messing up so many passes in training the other night. If I was the coach I would not even play myself by the way I was playing. Several times when I got passed to I tried to pass it to another teammate and just gave it straight back to the other team. In a match that just means I am a complete liability because it will lead to conceding

Is it possible to improve at football at an older age? Because it seems like all the others in my team have played their entire lives so I have a lot of catching up to do.

They're named after a town in Dorset, so must be pretty common, but I'd never heard of them before.

Burger here, I've been living in Yurp for a while now but still haven't made it to the UK. As a 'mercan I take it with a grain of salt when Euros tell me transit is "bad" anywhere, but I do hear its supposed to be "bad" outside of London.

Do you guys own cars? Is owning a car necessary to live where you are?

I live in Ware and we have quite a few narrowboats semi permanent and passing through, looking at a couple today and a thought struck me.

How do you get mail or register for a doctor etc? Forget dentists. No one can register with them.

Broadband would be via mobile hotspots etc. Electricity via battery/panel or hookup at mooring. Water in your tanks and what have you. Can't see many postmen trudging up and down a towpath looking for the Dawntreader.

Too old and settled now, but in another life I'd quite fancy a narrowboat.

We’ve all seen the JSO protests in various events. I’d like to think a good number of people here agree with the point they are making while being uncomfortable about the way they make the point.

I for one would not run into the field in Twickenham in the middle of the final. There is no cause in the world that would make me run into a professional Rugby front row.

Putting that to one side, how would you protest to make people really stop and think without annoying them to a point where your message suffers.

I'm a southerner, but recently noticed I'm the only one who seems to say "tin" rather than "can". I think I got it from my Dad, who's from Birmingham. Meanwhile, my Mum (from Winchester) prefers "can".

Which do you/people in your area tend to prefer and is this a regional thing?

EDIT: It has come to my attention that I should probably have been more specific. I'm talking about the container that beans, soup, and other foodstuffs are sold in, not the many other uses for both of these words. Thanks for all the wonderful comments though, they gave me a good laugh!

Just checked the weather and it looks like it's gonna be a wet one. Any recommendations for things to do in the area (we don't mind driving a bit). Preferably something the kids (toddler and five) would enjoy.

I am not in London but am going to be selling my car at the end of the month to sort out closing off any finance/insurance, etc on the car.

I’ll be getting a new car at the end of September I think, but between august and September I’m not going to have a car.

I was looking at the enterprise car club as an option, as I may need a car once per week in September to get to Milton Keynes, I wasn’t sure if there were other similar schemes that you all would recommend?

Specified earlier I’m not in London as it doesn’t appear Zipcar operates in my town, so that is for sure out but open to suggestions on short term coverage! :)

Why does it feel better, mentally and physically to hold a mug by the body rather than the handle that’s literally built into the thing, designed explicitly for holding?

Currently trying to buy a house and it's a nightmare, solicitors putting in minimal effort and getting things wrong, then taking forever to fix things. Any time I mention this to someone it seems they have a similar story.

I've read stuff on Reddit in the past about people charging your card multiple times or other general dodginess. I think I'll try not to get too drunk as one defence but being informed would be useful too. Anyone got some tips?

For context, I have 13 and 8 year old daughters to try and keep interested so I want to mix a couple of things to keep them interested in with the things I want to do. What's a good place to find out about banks worth opening savings accounts with that avoid major fossil fuel (and other bad things) investment? The usual suspects that are on the street protesting don't seem to actually have divestment lists.
