Maybe Movim or debacle will correct me, but I'm seeing a trend towards more people adopting XMPP bc of better interoperability, clients and performance and recently also issues with Matrix. The XMPP stand volunteers at FOSDEM also said the same, mostly people that got frustrated with Matrix and wanted to leanr more about XMPP.
I myself got back into XMPP, as it wasn't reliable enough for me. For example my server's monitoring needs to notify me reliably.
