Excellent shave with the Thiers-Issard, even though there was some slight irritation late in the shave (maybe a slight reaction to the soap?).

Have a good evening!

Now that everybody has digested somewhat their voting trauma, it is time to reopen the wounds. 😱

The voting procedure for the BVWSC consisted up to now in me simply winging it, but last month, I didn't wing it correctly, and dukkha ensued. First, I got trigger happy and announced a winner when some important members (ahem @[email protected] ahem) had not yet voted. In order to prevent this from ever happening again, what I would like to propose is that we formalize a bit more the process, in the sense that there should be some fixed amount of time (48 hours?) for each of the soap nomination thread and the voting thread, and that a winner can be announced only after this time.

Second, there is potentially an issue with the voting procedure and count. What I have done so far is to allot a number of points which is inverse to the rank you proposed. That is, assuming three proposed soaps, the soap ranked first gets 3 points, the soap ranked 2nd get 2 points, and the soap ranked 3rd gets 1 point. Then, I simply add up these points, and announce the winner. This is similar to a Borda count (which I didn't know, but you can read up here and more in detail here. Borda counts are unproblematic as long as every voter ranks every soap - which has not been the case in the last vote, and which may have cost Westman Shaving's Noir the victory. @[email protected] suggested that someone who did not rank all soaps should be counted as attributing some points to the soaps he did not vote for. That is, assuming our example with 3 soaps, someone who ranked only one soap (which therefore gets 3 points) should also be counted as attributing in the end some points to the other two soaps. I see Dave's point, and am sympathetic to it, but I don't know exactly what would be the best formula.

The easiest method in that spirit would be that the unranked soaps get to share the points that could have been, but have not been, attributed (which would make 1.5 points for each remaining soap - which could also be rounded down to 1 point?). Alternatively, we could also require that any voter provide a full ranking. Any opinion on these proposals, or idea or other proposals how to better implement something similar, but better?

I don't have any intrinsic preference, other than I would like to have a method that can be easily implemented in a spreadsheet (by me, without much knowledge of spreadsheets).

Thank you in advance for your input, and if you have any other complaints/proposals/questions about the process or BVWSC more in general, please feel free to do so.

¡Compañeros afeitadores!

This is just to remind you that Wednesday is this day - prepare your Oro Valley!

I'm less tired than yesterday, but it's still an effort moving around in the flat.

Have a good evening!

I somehow f-ed up the first pass - the lather was not slick at all, and not protective. I took refuge in MOAR SOAP MOAR WATER, and the rest worked better. The after-shave face feel with Ishtar is always very good, and same today. Next week, I will go back to the more exciting razors.

Have a good evening!

Apparently I had some pent-up complaints that needed airing 😅

Festivus season is nearly upon us, with its airing of grievances

If you're interested in experiencing just how shite this brush is, I'd be happy to loan it to you before the exorcism.

That's really kind of you, but after some reflection, I think I'll pass on this one

No complaints about the brush today? Have you attained th acceptance-stage?

I can't compare the same razor in zamac and stailess, but the Greencult has a drag that none of my other razors have, and my Karve also drags a bit. Maybe some polishing would heh 🤷

I don't have much experience with stainless steel or brass razors, but I find that chrome-plated razors slide better on the skin.

But then, you can chrome-plate stainless steel or brass just as well as zamac 🙄

I see you upgraded - buttons in the web interface are no longer in the same places 🙃

But everything looking good!

The Flying Wing is maybe not the best GEM razor, but definitely the prettiest. And brutal burn with Marmara Barber.

Have a good evening!

Tuesday, November 12, 2024: Zingari Zischtig

Since @[email protected] used his entire collection of R41s today, I felt compelled to follow suit: I shaved with every R41 that I own (n=1).

I'm a bit under the weather since yesterday, and nauseous from time to time. Hope that this gets better soon.

Have a good evening!

Good shave, but I still have a slight tingle on my face. There are maybe 2 or 3 shaves still left on the sample.

Have a good evening!

EDIT: Winner = You and I (Must Die) by House of Mammoth!

Vote below by indicating your choice for your soap!

PS: Nearly managed to list the soaps (counter-) alphabetically 🙄

December is the busiest month for postal services, so it's time to prep. Please nominate here your soaps that you wish to be used on December 18 for the 5th installment of the BVWSC! For the newcomers: If your nominated soap wins the election, you have the honor and priviledge to send out smushes to the other shavers here.

Reminder:

  • July: AYLM Don José
  • September: MacDuff's Old Strathcona
  • October: LPL Narcisse
  • November: Stirling Oro Valley

Since I had to throw away my trusty Floid The Genuine , I live in dissatisfaction: I don't have anymore an aftershave that fits basically any soap, smells good and plays nice with my skin.

Do you have any recommendations for one-size-fits-it-all aftershaves?

It's time to prep for November's BVWSC!

In October, Narcisse eaked out a very narrow win against Stirlings Oro Valley.

@[email protected] – who proposed Oro Valley – would be open to repropose it for November.

Therefore the question: Can we forgo the normal voting procedure, and use Oro Valley by acclamation?

Aye or Nay?

If the Nays win, I will open a soap proposal thread, as usual.

Get ready for tomorrow; sniffing the smush seems promising.

~~Vote for your favorite soap!~~ The people has spoken: Narcisse

Since we cannot trust postal services anymore: Nominate your soap for the October group shave!

This is the voting thread for the 2nd edition of the Buena Vista Wetshaving Social Club of September – which will take place on September 18. Please comment under each soap, just like last time.

The first edition stil has not taken place (maybe this Wednesday?), but given that even the Swiss postal service cannot be relied upon any more, we should get going for the preparation for September.

We could proceed like last time and everybody nominates a soap; we could also make it a turning presidency, and we simply decide who sends out the soap this time (and we let that person choose).

PS: Since I'm in Paris, and the Olympic (and Paralolympic) Games will be starting next Friday and last until September, I think it would be safer if this time, it isn't me who sends out samples.

You have spoken: the community shave will take place on July 17th (the 3rd Wednesday of July)!

But we still have to pick to soap. Every soap will get their own comment, and if you want to vote for this soap, please comment below the soap nomination with something indicating your approbation. You can vote for several soaps; in case of a tie, we will figure something out.
