The main reason I was interested in this community is because it was FOSS only. Lots of people on Lemmy talk about proprietary clients already. It's sad IMO that people would use a proprietary client after all that happened with reddit.

The problem with restricting this community to FOSS is that you’re also choking out people/organizations that simply want to retain ownership of what they create or seek long-term sustainability. Retaining ownership of something or charging for something doesn’t automatically mean malicious intent. Both FOSS and proprietary have their place, and each one can be more sustainable than the other depending on the project and the maintainers. We should definitely be against people and companies that are exploiting user privacy, but we shouldn’t be banning everyone that simply wish to retain ownership of what they create as well.

Yeah i wish i could go that way but notany people wants this community to go that way it seems

I just got here now. Looks like I missed a bit of drama! Now I'm curious what original the proposal was... something about FOSS-only?

Thank you for listening to the community

I don't think limiting this community to fewer apps is going to boost engagement or activity; just my two cents.

(Edit: There just aren't that many new exciting Lemmy app developments to post about I guess? Maybe encouraging/cross posting from various feature update/release posts in other communities would help?)

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago

Definetly cross posting is encouraged

Under this criteria, Apollo would have been banned. I feel like everyone has been very respectful in posting open source, closed source, paid, and free apps alike here so far. What are the exact problems in this community that you’re trying to solve?

Do read the edit i think you'll like it

Introduce people to better foss and privacy respecting apps . Now a very large chunk of lemmy users use apps like boost and sync which tracks users.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago) (1 children)

So you’re saying the main issue with this community is that Lemmy users are stumbling upon apps that track them? What about free, closed-source apps that fully respect privacy?

I think having a featured thread that categorizes apps by open/closed source or privacy policies would be better. More transparency should be the goal here, especially since FOSS app communities already exist.

What about free, closed-source apps that fully respect privacy?

Can you provide an example because if an app is free and fully respect privacy it wouldn't be closed.

So you’re saying the main issue with this community is that Lemmy users are stumbling upon apps that track them?

No not stumbling as i said i said there are aldready subs for them and in here i want to promote foss apps

My app Arctic falls into the free, closed source, privacy respecting category. I see what your going for as far as a direction for the community, but it is limiting for apps such as mine. Just because software is free, and doesn’t track its users does not necessarily mean it needs to be open source. Closed source software also does not equate to being nefarious or tracking users.

I’m a big fan of FOSS, and am working towards open sourcing components of Arctic, but I haven’t decided whether I want to fully open source the project.

What I’d prefer to see is requirements for post formatting. So all submissions need to include information about the client

  • pricing (free) (paid) (freemium) (IAP)
  • source (closed-source) (open-source)
  • tracking (ads) (crashlitics) (anonymous) (etc)
  • platforms (web) (windows) (linux) (iOS) (android) (cross)

I’m a fan of this community because it is the only one I’ve found that is targeted specifically at providing information about lemmy clients, and with the proposed changes, I see that information becoming more fragmented. I’d rather see changes along the lines of what I suggested, or similar, and then maybe a new community could be born (FOSSLemmyApps) which could be advertised in a stickied post here, and included in the sidebar.

Ultimately, it is up to you as the moderator, but I do hope you’ll consider feedback from the existing subscribers. Perhaps an open discussion, or a poll would be good for getting feedback about the proposed changes.

I think it's a bad idea. Foss communities already exist and the largest two lemmy apps by user base are sync and boost.

Exactly those two are towering over better apps that are foss and respects privacy.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Better by what standard? They aren't the most used apps just for not being foss.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago

Better by privacy, security and ethical standard.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I agree l, but if the focus of the community is Foss lemmy apps, then it might end up being a niche community.

Again. It's up to you really, but the focus should be on lemmy apps in general rather than Foss ones.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (2 children)

There are subs with a very large userbase dedicated to boost and lemmy so maybe this will become niche but atleast i can help promote the foss devs.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Also. If I may ask, which app do you use yourself?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

I use jerboa.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I'm all for Foss and if you see a good direction for the community, then it's all welcomed.

Well, time to leave, it seems. And that's coming from someone who loves FOSS.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

So what would you prefer ? I am just trying to keep this /c/ in good shape.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)

is punctuation still allowed?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Yes but if you have any problem with how i am running this community you can raise your concerns in this post or dm me.
