As a retail employee, I'm so tired of the standard Muzak that Christmas music would be a blessing tbh.
they've already setup their stores for xmas.
My daughter's pre-school just sent out a message this week that the kids are preparing for a Christmas concert. It asked parents to help them practice the lyrics in the meantime and then provided a copy of that atrocity. There's like five other popular Christmas songs I can think of off the top of my head that are religiously neutral, but we couldn't do Up On the Housetop, could we?

Be so serious, Mariah Carey is far from the worst Christmas song in retail.
"I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" is a fucking crime.
True, but in the US, the song has been overplayed so much that people tend to hate it more than much worse songs.
Same thing happened to Wham's Last Christmas (which was a worse song to begin with) in Scandinavia, Germany, and probably elsewhere too.
Better than the half-assed covers that Target plays year-round.
There are some truly terrible remixes on repeat in TJ Maxx/Marshall's/Homegoods as well.
Those songs infuriate me, Walmart does the same thing too. They always sound like some mediocre dude/dudette just banged them out in an afternoon over some knockoff karaoke backing track. As somebody who tries to appreciate when music has a lot of effort or technical skill or even deep emotion put into it, those songs are an affront to me in every way that matters.
Do you think the Christmas gods would relent this year if we just offered up a small fortune to Mariah?
She already gets a gigantic one every year, owing to her being one of the few popular musicians who actually own the rights to their music (the vast majority of popular music being owned by just 3 conglomerates), but still she keeps going.
She even calls the excruciatingly extended Christmas period "Mariah SZN" 🤮🤬
In Germany it is Wham with Last Christmas.

Same here in Denmark. I likes me some careless whispers and being woken up before you go go, but Last Christmas can fuck right off forever.
