Rules

  1. Be nice to each other. Being aggressive or inflammatory towards other users will get you banned. Name calling or obvious trolling falls under that. Hate cars, hate the system, but not people. While some drivers definitely deserve some hate, most of them didn't choose car-centric life out of free will.

  2. No bigotry or hate. Racism, transphobia, misogyny, ableism, homophobia, chauvinism, fat-shaming, body-shaming, stigmatization of people experiencing homeless or substance users, etc. are not tolerated. Don't use slurs. You can laugh at someone's fragile masculinity without associating it with their body. The correlation between car-culture and body weight is not an excuse for fat-shaming.

  3. Stay on-topic. Submissions should be on-topic to the externalities of car culture in urban development and communities globally. Posting about alternatives to cars and car culture is fine. Don't post literal car fucking.

  4. No traffic violence. Do not post depictions of traffic violence. NSFW or NSFL posts are not allowed. Gawking at crashes is not allowed. Be respectful to people who are a victim of traffic violence or otherwise traumatized by it. News articles about crashes and statistics about traffic violence are allowed. Glorifying traffic violence will get you banned.

  5. No reposts. Before sharing, check if your post isn't a repost. Reposts that add something new are fine. Reposts that are sharing content from somewhere else are fine too.

  6. No misinformation. Masks and vaccines save lives during a pandemic, climate change is real and anthropogenic - and denial of these and other established facts will get you banned. False or highly speculative titles will get your post deleted.

  7. No harassment. Posts that (may) cause harassment, dogpiling or brigading, intentionally or not, will be removed. Please do not post screenshots containing uncensored usernames. Actual harassment, dogpiling or brigading is a bannable offence.

Please report posts and comments that violate our rules.

What can you get to within a 15-minute walk of your house?

A recent YouGov survey asked Americans what they think they should be able to get to within a 15-minute walk of their house.

Of these choices, I can currently walk to all of them from my apartment, aside from a university (no biggie, I'm not currently studying, although there is a Tafe within walking distance), a hospital, and a sports arena.

How many can you get to with a 15 minute walk from your house?

@ajsadauskas @fuck_cars All but the hospital, university, arena, movie theatre, and bank. Notably all of those are still less than 45 minutes walk and understandable. Also all are under 20 minutes on my bike.

I'm actually surprised that my area of Wisconsin has the majority of these within a 15 minute walk. Bar included, of course. It makes me appreciate my neighborhood more.

@ajsadauskas @fuck_cars I'm kind of sad that "cafe", "bookstore", and "library" aren't even on this list at all. 😢

I would honestly have to do a web search to find out where the nearest elementary school, day care, and gas station are, but I'd be stunned if I didn't have those within 15 minutes. As it is, I do have everything else, including a university and a sports arena, and *two* malls. (I'm in between the Barclays Center and Long Island University in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, NYC.)

8 of these if a Dollar general counts as a grocery store, otherwise 7.

A lot of stuff actually, but I'm pretty damn lucky to like in a place that's somewhat walkable and not a death sentence to ride a bike in.

@ajsadauskas @fuck_cars I can walk to all except university (1hr walk, or 15min bike ride) and sports center (1+ hr walk, 18min bike ride).

I don't get the gas station though. Why so many "should"s? Why would you need to walk to a gas station?

Unless ppl are considering "gas station" to mean "convenience store", which in a lot of America that's what they are.

@ajsadauskas @fuck_cars Ok, so the university one depends on what you call a university. If it's a 4 year liberal arts college (teaches many things) then yeah, 1hr walk, 15min bike.

If it's any undergraduate or graduate program, then my answer switches to yet. There's a Keller Graduate School of Management across the street from me.

@ajsadauskas @fuck_cars 57% of respondents prefer to drink and drive.

How is bar so low?? Do people want drunk drivers? Because that’s how you get drunk drivers

[–] [email protected] 0 points 10 months ago (2 children)

They probably forgot to sample Wisconsin.

Wisconsin honestly doesn't want bars close to houses because the bars are all sequestered together in a small area so the noise can't reach the houses

F to the poor souls that live above the bars in those Main Street buildings they use as bars now

Not everyone wants to get drunk regularly, and having a bar close by could potentially bring drunk people in your neighborhood. Most of the bars in my city are clustered in commercial complexes, which are usually quiet empty after regular end of business hours.

The vibe I get here in the American midwest is that bars belong clustered on a narrow strip downtown, in very high density so you can bar hop on foot, but located far away from housing so no one has to deal with the rowdiness it attracts.

I definitely understand and agree with the argument that small shops and services like post offices, gas stations, and grocery stores being interspersed within walkable neighborhoods can only be a good thing. But for anyone viewing bars through this lens, dividing and conquering them ends up detracting from a crucial part of the experience.

I suppose if you prefer calmer bars, or if your local bar is the haunt of your local clique that you happen to be a part of, a small, lonely bar would be a nice experience. But that's not what I'd say most people I know go to bars for.
