Rules

  1. Be nice to each other. Being aggressive or inflammatory towards other users will get you banned. Name calling or obvious trolling falls under that. Hate cars, hate the system, but not people. While some drivers definitely deserve some hate, most of them didn't choose car-centric life out of free will.

  2. No bigotry or hate. Racism, transphobia, misogyny, ableism, homophobia, chauvinism, fat-shaming, body-shaming, stigmatization of people experiencing homeless or substance users, etc. are not tolerated. Don't use slurs. You can laugh at someone's fragile masculinity without associating it with their body. The correlation between car-culture and body weight is not an excuse for fat-shaming.

  3. Stay on-topic. Submissions should be on-topic to the externalities of car culture in urban development and communities globally. Posting about alternatives to cars and car culture is fine. Don't post literal car fucking.

  4. No traffic violence. Do not post depictions of traffic violence. NSFW or NSFL posts are not allowed. Gawking at crashes is not allowed. Be respectful to people who are a victim of traffic violence or otherwise traumatized by it. News articles about crashes and statistics about traffic violence are allowed. Glorifying traffic violence will get you banned.

  5. No reposts. Before sharing, check if your post isn't a repost. Reposts that add something new are fine. Reposts that are sharing content from somewhere else are fine too.

  6. No misinformation. Masks and vaccines save lives during a pandemic, climate change is real and anthropogenic - and denial of these and other established facts will get you banned. False or highly speculative titles will get your post deleted.

  7. No harassment. Posts that (may) cause harassment, dogpiling or brigading, intentionally or not, will be removed. Please do not post screenshots containing uncensored usernames. Actual harassment, dogpiling or brigading is a bannable offence.

Please report posts and comments that violate our rules.

What can you get to within a 15-minute walk of your house?

A recent YouGov survey asked Americans what they think they should be able to get to within a 15-minute walk of their house.

Of these choices, I can currently walk to all of them from my apartment, aside from a university (no biggie, I'm not currently studying, although there is a Tafe within walking distance), a hospital, and a sports arena.

How many can you get to with a 15 minute walk from your house?

@[email protected] @[email protected] I can get to all of those except a hospital and arena, too. Most in much less than 15 min. Granted, I live in a small city with a still vibrant downtown.

Of course, I wouldn't walk right now. It's freezing out there!

Where is “cricket pitch”? That and pub would come top where I’m from.

@ajsadauskas @fuck_cars I built free software to quantify amenity categories within a 10-min walk:

- Bank / ATM
- Bar / pub
- Barber
- Bike shop
- Bus stop / Rail Station

Why do you need a gas station in walking distance?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 10 months ago

The one by me is basically a convenience store that also sells gas and is open 24/7.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 10 months ago

I love that.

"Ok guys, picture a future city where everything you need is in walking distance. You can walk to the grocery store instead of driving. There's a park in your neighbourhood so whenever the weather's good you can be outside with your feet in the grass in just a few minutes. If you want to go out to eat, there are restaurants a short walk away. It's a nice, safe community where your kids can even walk to school on their own. Got it? Ok, in that kind of city, what kinds of things would you need to find a short walk away?"

"A Gas Station, for my Car, so I can Drive."

I can think of things like lawn mowers n shit.

But also, gas station is kind of synonymous with convienient store imo

[–] [email protected] 0 points 10 months ago (1 children)

@mob @HeavyDogFeet Private lawns are an extreme luxury that shouldn't be needed. Also petrol mowers in a densely populated area are very anti social, and with the quality of electric options, why allow them?

Weird. When I lived in the states, there were plenty of convenience stores that weren't attached to gas stations, and the people I knew talked about getting things "from the convenience store" even when they were getting it from the gas station, but I guess that could be a state thing or a regional thing, or even just a city-by-city thing. I take your point about the lawn mowers etc potentially needing gas though.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Oh yeah, not all convenience stores are gas stations... But most gas stations are convenience stores.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 10 months ago

@mob @HeavyDogFeet You already have everything set up to sell things, might as well sell more things.

I can reach half of them by foot and the other half by public transit in a similar amount of time. Sweden here obviously lol

I live in a city of 1/2 million and have not even one of these within a 15-minute walk. Some, I could not care less such as bars, but a grocery store, gym, and park would be nice.

I live in a big city and every single one of these things is within 15 minutes walk from my door except a sports arena, although if you substitute that for a gym with a pool and basketball court there's half a dozen.

I love it because I never need to use my car. Although there are consequences... Heavy traffic, loud music at night, unruly people in my neighborhood, ambulance sounds, people who rev their cars and motorcycles, trash on the street sometimes, etc.

I grew up a bit far outside of any neighborhood which meant every single trip involved the car and 20 plus minutes of driving. That lifestyle is perfect for some people because they appreciate the isolation. But it also meant planning well ahead and if you needed a quick run to the hardware store or some convenience item it would take half a day. The percentage of my childhood life in the car was too damn high.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Zero. In my car... still zero.

I have a 90-minute drive to work because moving to walkable range would be too expensive.

The houses near my office start around 4-5 million dollars. Apartments within walking distance cost $3,000/month for 600 square feet.

What city is this? I apologize if that's not something you want to share.

15 what? Fuck that shit...

[–] [email protected] 0 points 10 months ago

You seem to be confused. What part are you talking issue with?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 10 months ago (4 children)

Am I the only one impressed 16% of people dont want a grocery store nearby?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 10 months ago (1 children)

They're probably picturing the typical American grocery store: giant warehouse-like building, massive parking lot, tons of people coming and going. It would be a bad idea to put one of those in the middle of a neighborhood.

I'm just confused about the people that want a gas station. Y'all are walking to get your gas?

But maybe it's to get a pack of smokes which tends to be only sold at gas stations where I live. But I dunno about this poll.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Gas stations in my area tend to have better food than the grocery store's deli. If you want something quick and good, its the way to go for us.

Lots of gas stations have a food menu now and things to grab late at night or when you don't want a full store.

I was thinking about that and wonder if they are concerned about additional food waste cause by having so many more grocery stores. Off the top of my head, I'm not coming up with another reason.
