This is a complete tonal change. Absolutely agree that it's worse looking.

Gotta admit the lighting looks just boring compared to the original. Hope they’ll patch that. Other than that, looks ok to me judging from that short video.

This studio have struggled with technology making every subsequent game to Until Dawn because Sony loaned them some talent to get that one over the line

why do they keep remaking and remastering games from what can only be called "this era" of gaming. as if there aren't hundreds of games that would be a better fit

Seems to be the same reason Hollywood just recycles shit; it’s easier than doing something new and there’s already consumer recognition for the product

I'm saying why things that already look good and play well. I'm not against remakes and remasters. with changing technology and conventions, games need it much more than movies do. but why not games that have not aged well.

Maybe they just want to sell the game again by adding a shitty 5 minute mod to it.

this looks to be remade significantly though. models are new, animations are new, scenes are repopulated, props added, lighting changed... not a small task.

Alright. 10 minutes then. Joking of course.

Truth is, some people can afford to look back at a project, think " I can do better", actually do it and then screw it up in completely new and different ways. It happens.

Or, for that matter, just making a new game with a similar genre.

The crazy thing is that supermassive have been bringing out games very regularly. They didn't need this to fill out their portfolio

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

obviously, but that's tons more work. what I'm saying is if you're gonna remake anything, just pick something that is truly outdated or has obtuse controls or something.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

They did that with Tomb Raider, but ironically the obtuse controls were pivotal to the game design.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

idk man I can see the appeal of tank controls for alone in the dark and resident evil but tomb raider is kind of an action adventure. idk the remake you're talking but I'd much rather play it normally today.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It wasn't the tank controls per se. It was the tile based actions. Tomb Raider was basically a 3D Prince of Persia game. If you're running and you press the jump button, the character would jump the next time to got to the edge of the current tile. It was a very deliberate and measured way to plan your moves.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago (1 children)

oh damn, I don't even remember that! yeah in that case you're right. the original pop is still one is my favorite games ever, and I will not have tile based controls fucked with. that's why the remake of that game was cool to see but wasn't nearly as satisfying to play.

My favourite was Flashback. Kind of the spiritual sequel to Another World. I had the SNES version. I think it's my all time favourite video game.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

i was in love with flashback. played both, but i always found another world a bit obtuse and clunky. right from the get go the slugs are one of the worst things I've ever encountered in a game. but flashback's controls were perfect. and it still looks amazing today! also the cutscenes and worldbuilding just mesmerized me.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

The sequel Fade to Black was too clunky to enjoy. I never played the remake but I hear the remake is getting a sequel, so I might pick it up.

To be "fair", it's pretty hard to look better because the original looked great. I would have paid full price for just a straight PC port.

it's not that, but they seem to have made terrible choices all the way through. in every single comparison I saw in the video the lighting was made way worse.

also the shoulder camera is a dumb idea that was clearly implemented because of resident evil and no other reason. but over the shoulder camera is distinctly a videogame camera, while until dawn was going for ~90s horror movie look and feel.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The camera through the first one feels like a stalker perspective, the new one makes it very gamey

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 month ago

I've played a bit and it's kind of the worst of both worlds. You change from a stationery camera to a gamey one that is still somewhat limited. You never know how much you can actually use the camera. Sometimes it's stationery, sometimes you only have about 180° to 270° control and sometimes full 360°. It always feels clunky.

The bad graphics and lighting play their own part in making it a much worse experience. I won't keep playing and instead hope that we'll get a working PS4 emulator.

From the graphical comparison i've seen online i can't but agree with than. And the price is quite excessive for a 10 year old game.
