2024-08-29

We got a ton of great feedback from our initial release, and have implemented a number of new features and bug fixes:

  • Added mark read on scroll (Settings -> General)
  • Added a default feed setting (Settings -> General)
  • Added a setting to adjust haptic behavior (Settings -> General)
  • Fixed the lock icon being the wrong color

We’ve got a lot more in the works, so if you commented yesterday with a bug or feature request that isn’t mentioned here, stay tuned! We expect to be releasing builds fairly rapidly over the next few days.

2024-08-28

This is the initial beta release. We're still bringing 2.0 up to feature parity with 1.0--this build should have everything you need to browse and interact with Lemmy. Please note that post creation and moderation tools are not currently supported in the 2.0 build--post creation is in active development and moderator tools are a high-priority item, so if you want to join the beta but those are important to you, check back in a week or two!

We've also got some new features:

  • Markdown support
  • Tiled post layout
  • Keep place on account switch (allows you to switch accounts without fully reloading the app)
  • Guest accounts
  • Color themes

Check out our 2.0 release post for more details on the new release.

Can we get a back button on iPad? I tried to get used to the glow around sections in the OLED theme, but it’s just distracting and frankly ugly. I’m requesting an improvement here as well. Thanks for all that you do for Lemmy.

Will this version include support for Apple’s translation API? I’d love to be able to read some of the posts that aren’t in my language.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago

We do plan to integrate the translation API, but it might come after we release 2.0 to the App Store—our primary focus right now is reaching feature parity with the v1 app so we can ship 2.0. That being said, we may build it into 2.0 before then as an excuse to play around with the new API.

Uploading a photo to any community fails with Error. Anyone getting this issue too?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

As Eric said, if you tap on the error it'll give you more info. Have you tried a different image? Some instances impose a maximum file size on the images you can upload. If that happens, it'll show the "error" toast. We'd like to make that error case show a more obvious warning in future.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago

It was exactly it! Image too large, it says. Fingers crossed Mlem make this process easier in the future🤞

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Thanks for the bug report! If you tap the error message at the top of the screen it will give you a more detailed error message—would you mind sharing that message so we can debug further?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago

Thanks. I tapped the error message and turned out it was image too large. So not a bug:D

The latest beta update is great!

[–] [email protected] 0 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Viewing cross posts is probably my favourite feature for 2.0 so far. It’s been a little over a week, and I can’t believe I used Lemmy without it!

[–] [email protected] 0 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

We're glad you like it 😄

[–] [email protected] 0 points 3 weeks ago

It’s great to read up on more conversations!

[–] [email protected] 0 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Search by post works great 🫡🫶💪

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 week ago

Now we just need search by comment. The only reason why I still have Voyager.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

New comment counts are back! Thanks.

I also submitted a bug report on GitHub, Mlem is marking posts read on scroll even when that option is unchecked in settings.

~~As I am typing this it appears the unearthly loud sounds are fixed too. Again, thank you.~~ I spoke too soon about the sound.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 month ago

Thanks for the bug report! We've already merged the mark read on scroll fix. The sound issue has proven a lot harder to track down, but we're working on it.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The latest padding updates are great, but the addition of a gray background (on dark mode) has made reading yet again more difficult due to the reduced contrast ratio.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 month ago

Thanks for the feedback! We've received a couple requests for an oled/"blackout" theme--we'll have one out soon.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Loving the new look so far! One thing I immediately noticed though is while scrolling through my subscriptions via the letters on the right, the view starts breaking with a ton of random space.

like so

Changing the sorting back and forth seems to fix the view, but rapidly scrolling back and forth will break it again.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 month ago

Thanks for the bug report! We'll look into it.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Possible to close the feed drawer without refreshing the feed? I keep opening the feed drawer on accident, but the only way I find to get back to my feed is to click on a feed (all/subscribed/local/saved) and then Mlem loses my place and it refreshes the feed.

ETA: iPhone with iOS 18 Mlem 2.0 (61)

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 month ago

Yeah, we'd love to have this but it's unfortunately very difficult to implement so is unlikely to happen anytime soon. We're tracking the issue here.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

The block options in feed do not work on ipad. You have to go to the community or user to perform the block.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I can't reproduce this issue at the moment; it seems to be working fine for me on an iOS 18 iPad simulator. Which part of it doesn't work - do the "Block Community" and "Block user" buttons not show up, or do they show up but not do anything when tapped? Thanks

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 month ago (1 children)

When trying to block, the window that comes up is extremely small. I will try uninstalling and reinstalling on my ipad. (You can barely see the little window at the bottom in my attached screenshot)

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Thanks for the info. I'll open an issue and try to reproduce it 👍

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Feature Request: View comments section like posts on the Lemmy website to watch the new comments in a community.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 1 month ago

This is planned 👍 It may or may not be in 2.0; we'll see.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Very much looking forward to V2! I've had to switch to Voyager for working spoiler markdown -- it's also excellent, but I generally prefer Mlem.

Cheeky questions while I'm here:

  1. Voyager also seems to handle GIFs in comments better, is that something on the cards for Mlem?
  2. Is there a plan to introduce swiping forward? I frequently accidentally swipe back to the community list and lose my place in the feed.
[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 months ago (1 children)

To add a little more insight on the gifs side: video handling is the next major item I'm working on. In theory, the media framework we use should make gifs free once video handling is working, so hopefully they'll be coming soon.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 months ago

Thanks - looking forward to it!

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 months ago

I'm glad you're enjoying Mlem!

It's something we'd like to add at some point; we're tracking the issue here. It may end up being in 2.0 or may not be.

Is there a plan to introduce swiping forward? I frequently accidentally swipe back to the community list and lose my place in the feed.

We'd love to have this feature but it is annoyingly very difficult to implement. The framework we're using doesn't natively support this, and neither does the framework that framework is built on. Apollo had this, but the code is of course closed-source so we can't get any insight into how they did it. We're tracking the issue here.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It says I've been removed from the test program. How do I get back in?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 months ago

We shut down the old TestFlight for Mlem v1, which you can read about here. You can find links to join the new TestFlight in this post.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 months ago

Feature request: label users on the app.

Please and thank you!

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 months ago (1 children)

This is so smooth, awesome.

Will you bring back the "compact comments" setting in the future?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 months ago

Yep, it'll be back :)

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 months ago (1 children)

May I make a feature request for fediverse project developer flairs for those who are the officially behind Lemmy, Mastodon, Sublinks, Piefed.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 months ago (1 children)

We did consider this in the past, but decided against it. Implementing this would mean that we - the Mlem developers - would have to decide who gets the flair and who doesn't. As the development teams of those projects change over time, we'd have to keep up with ensuring their current developers are correctly flaired. This would take time that could be spent developing new features for Mlem instead. There are also many Fediverse projects, and we don't want people asking "why don't the [XYZ] developers have flairs?" if we start giving out flairs to only the developers of certain projects. I hope that makes sense :)

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 months ago

Thank you for the perspective. That is a good point raised.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 months ago

Finally Mlem has link support!

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I can’t seem to upvote or post? When I upvote I get the animation then it returns to the old number. Posts I just get Error.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Thanks for the bug report! It looks like this is due to the antique backend Beehaw is still running--we'll have a compatibility patch out soon.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Thank you! Is GitHub issues or here a better place to report?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 2 months ago

We don't have a preference--we monitor both pretty actively so whatever is easiest.
