I have a Redmi Note 11, I am planning to install a custom ROM. This is the first time I'm about to do something like this.

How good of a reputation does the Paranoid Android OS have? Will I get good long term support? How functional is it?

As someone who has installed a lot of roms, I recommend staying with the stock one. It can be really useful on very old phones, but it is not necessary on most current devices. The two biggest issues I had were the lack of floating windows and the play integrity api issue. Also MIUI (without bloatware) is the most useful Android interface. Pure Android is nice and simple but not suitable for everyday use.

Yup, you are right. Mobile banking seems to be really difficult on custom ROMs and overall it just brings too many issues. I will keep using the stock ROM for now (HyperOS). I have google play services disabled, all Gapps and Xiaomi bloatware apps deleted. I feel like that's good enough. RethinkDNS to block internet connection from apps that don't need it. I shouldn't let "perfect" get in the way of good.

Do you have any other suggestions to make my phone a bit less of a data mine?

You don't need anything extra to block internet connections for applications. You can directly block them from the app information itself. I think what you've done so far is very good and sufficient for phone internal use. The important part now is the browser section, and I think you can handle that too.

I am aware of that feature, but I can't do the same for a few essential system apps that constantly ping chinese IPs for whatever reason.

As for my browser, I mostly use Tor browser for browsing/reading and Mull for downloading and streaming.

Am I being too paranoid? lmao

Mull is dead on performance and I think you're being very paranoid

Wdym by dead on performance? works fine for me.

And yeah, I feel like I'm nailing my feet just to avoid walking into a trap here lol. I should relax, I've minimized a LOT of data collection already.

Any good browser suggestion you have?

For daily use, Mull is not suitable.

Love that song

Paranoid devs abandon development all the time. The last time I paid attention they were releasing A13 just as everyone else is working on A14

After years of ROM-ing phones, I recommend using LineageOS. They are going to have the longest support for a given phone. If your phone is available in their list, that means it is well supported with all functionality.

Its not available for my device (Redmi Note 11)

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Ah. Sorry, I should have looked it up for you before I commented. I see someone else posted an unofficial version. You'd probably be happy with that, though not being official does kind of remove the advantage over other ROMs.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 months ago

Oh don't worry about it, mistakes happen.

Paranoid Android seems to be working on Android 14 right now and they are regularly publishing updates on their discord/telegram groups. They seem like a pretty active team, I'll just go ahead and flash the ROM I guess.

I've already seen this page before.

The title says [UNOFFICIAL] and the rom isn't available in the actual LineageOS official website. Is this version really safe?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I'm running the unoffical one on my Samsung S8 without issues since it's been released. Unofficial only means it's not supported and compiled from the LOS developers. They're safe and stable

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Do the unofficial builds get regular security updates, though? Even if they do, I don't think it's the best idea to rely on two independent developers at the same time, I'd rather not have multiple points of faliure.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Yes they do. At least the maintainer for the S8 releases them regularily. That's not something i would worry about. When the unofficials get a stable state they're fine and only get the latest patches from LOS. I'm running customs since 8 years and i never had problems.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 months ago (1 children)

I hope they do the same for my phone. Any way I can check if it's being maintained? Thanks.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 months ago (1 children)

Since the latest release was in June i guess they added the latest security patches. Click on the download link, it will forward you to the github page. And since this rom has OTA updates they definitely incorporate patches
