I'm not sure rural America and rural Australia are that close.
Even bum fuck nowhere Australia is quite diverse in people and have information about other countries and travel to the big cities fairly regularly. Both seemed to have great friendly people though.
Also the most dangerous sketchy places are in the outback, though some of the towns are fine, whereas in America it seems to be in specific cities or parts of cities, and others are fine.

The Mid-Atlantic coast is from Virginia up to New York. The term originated with the 13 colonies, where it was one of three primary groupings, alongside New England (Conn, RI, Mass, NH) and the South (Georgia and the Carolinas).
At that time, Mid-Atlantic was being used in the context of the North American continent, rather than the USA, which didn't yet exist. So if you consider the whole Atlantic coast of North America including New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, it makes more sense.
