It's by far the part of the game I like the least... there's always a couple of gold nuggets I can't seem to find. It's boring, and also frustrating to see my food supply dwindle.

I always keep a magic mapping scroll for the cave, saves a lot of effort.

Thanks all for the tips! I'll make sure to try them out.

I’ve noticed that using a teleport spell will take you to, or very near, an unexplored area. If I feel like I’ve looked everywhere that shows signs of being a false wall then I’ll use a teleport spell and that solves it for me. Same goes for finding secret rooms in fully explored levels if I have a lot of unused teleportation spells.

Gold and hidden rooms are never contained deep into walls, there's no reason to dig more than 1 or 2 tiles out from a room in search of secrets.

Knowing this, I was able to find the gold I needed fairly quickly. Thanks!

From my experience I'd check the areas surrounded by open caves first with at least a 3x3 area available not explored/mined yet

Edit: to clarify, a 5x5 area to include the walls of the smallest area extra gold could be found in

Just played the part myself rn. It is really annoying to see the food getting less and less :/
