Crazy how vancded offers what premium used to be, makes no sense to buy a subscription if the paid version is a worse experience

[–] [email protected] 4 points 6 months ago (2 children)

What about the YouTube premium subscription makes it a worse experience than free?

[–] [email protected] 11 points 6 months ago

No sponsor skip, no downvote count.

Paid youtube expensive AND shit.

Still has YT shorts, still no dislike button.

We're paying but it doesn't feel like we're customers. It feels like we're paying protection money otherwise we get ads shoveled down our throats again.

true! It feels like we're paying extortion fees.

Music streaming services are all the same to me. Picked up Google play music many years ago. When they switched to YT music, getting ad free YT videos was just a bonus. Also, they didn't raise the price for 8 years. For the family plan, it's a pretty good deal.

I went to Google IO the year they announced Google Music (2013?) and they offered a special discount for those in attendance. I gotta hand it to them, even through all those transitions (Red, YouTube Premium) they have grandfathered me into the new services with the similar discounted price. If they ever took the discount away, I still kinda feel like the family plan is a bit justified given how much my wife and I consume YouTube content.

You we're getting as free YT videos? I'm just paying to be harassed for now because I don't have time to shop around for a replacement. Killing podcasts was the last straw.

GPM became YT Red (later YT premium) which is just a music streaming service and ad free YT vids. I never used it for podcasts anyway. PocketCast for Android for that purpose.

I switched from Google photos to immich so I could keep my photos more private (self hosted on my own NAS). I still keep Google photos installed on my phone so I can edit photos (the editor is really nice to use). Every time I open it, it bugs me to resume backing up to Google. This week I found that it had started backing up to Google again although I don't remember accepting so I had to go and clear out all the uploaded photos again.

I hate this. Even when I decline to back up it usually then nags me with a second screen asking if I want to do a one time backup. Like, no. I don't want to send any of my photos to Google.

Supposedly their motive is altruistic in nature for not allowing this "reminder" to be disabled is that some users may forget to backup and not wanting the user to get upset with losing something.

basically any tech company at this stage.

Me: No I don't want a thing.
Tech: Ok we will check with you again in 2 weeks.
Me: or you could stop?
Tech: Na, we will see you in 2 weeks.

[–] [email protected] 33 points 6 months ago (1 children)

2 weeks? Try every time i open the app.

I go on Microsoft.con:

Cookies?

Reject all.

Load another page.

Yeah but... Cookies?

Fuck off already!!

[–] [email protected] 5 points 6 months ago

Microsoft: But how am I supposed to know you don't want cookies without storing 29 cookies on your device?

[–] [email protected] 7 points 6 months ago (3 children)

I want to make a joke about that typo, but I don't want to tease.

I also want to make a joke about going on microsoft.com being the first mistake, but I know there are occasionally reasons to do so.

I guess with this comment, I'm trying to have my two cakes and eat them, too.

Wouldn't you rather have all of these cookies?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Only necessary ones!

Also, in culinary terms, cake is much more reliably and pleasantly textured than cookies. I expect this to not be a controversial statement in the least.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 months ago

Give me a sponge, give me tres leches, give me an angel food or shortcake smothered in fruit. I’d always rather cake than cookies, but keep that frosting shit to yourself. (Ooh I made it spicy ;) )

Sadly I noticed the typo then fixed it. Then I saw the funny side myself and reverted the fix 👍

Yes I went on the site because for some inexplicable reason my email my business account decided it wanted to put my girlfriend's name as my account name (presumably it did this after she logged in her work account not long ago), and now everyone keeps referring to me by my girlfriend's name 😂

I wasn't sure how to turn it back (turns out the outlook app lacks a LOT of features. Who knew?), and one of the search results linked to Microsoft's help page.

Ended up logging in via the browser to fix it. Stupid Microsoft.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 months ago (1 children)

Respect to you for reverting the fix to accommodate the funny.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago (1 children)

We all have to accommodate the funny. If we didn't laugh at the world, we'd cry. If I can make just one person chuckle per day, it's a good day ❤️

And I'm happy I get to make that comment at 23:59 local time!

This is a lesson I learned both from the webcomic "Bob and George" and, later, TVTropes. In case either of those are unfamiliar to you, I strongly recommend both, with the caveat that either - especially the latter - can be a tremendous time sink.

I would suggest all the domain squatters should be legally required to use that TLD.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 6 months ago

Were I a policy maker, your suggestion would be approved.

[–] [email protected] 51 points 6 months ago (1 children)

you forgot the part where :

Tech: Well it's been only a week but here is a reminder anyway

[–] [email protected] 7 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago)

Tech: we'll remove features from the free version until you buy!

[–] [email protected] 45 points 6 months ago

I got a pop-up advertising premium where the close button said, "No, I like ads"
