Interesting factoid from that article is that a crackdown in Japan has seen a two-thirds decrease in piracy over from 2021 to 2023, which is very substantial. They then go on to say that piracy globally went up 6.7% in 2023 compared to 2022, so I guess Japan is an anomaly.

I did hear that Japan's copyright laws are draconian, and boy, are they efficient at getting people for it. These last years I did see a lot of news about people who do scans and such getting arrested over there.

I think you're confusing Brazil having a lot of pirates to having good piracy laws
As I mentioned in another thread, about the same subject: that's mostly for show, with zero practical impact on the population. They might jail someone but you'll get 10 new streamers in their place. Same deal with the alleged seizure of TV boxes, mine is still working fine.
