I thought it was just good enough that I kept watching, but not actually good enough to recommend or anything.

Unrelated, but I instinctively tried to close the tweet on that page by pressing the "X" logo in the top corner of it like it was an ad.

It was great. I loved the vault stuff. Loved the flashbacks, especially the climactic one with the earpiece.

Would love to show it to friends who don't know fallout and see what they think.

I never played Fallout. Really enjoying the show.

I would say it definitely has a video game feel, that is they're on a quest, within some kind of a side quest, additional characters seem like NPCs, and the chase just seems to go on.

No real complaint in that, it might be the best story version of a video game I've seen, but once you pick up on it it's hard not to shake the thought.

I enjoyed it, glad to see season 2.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago

Good it surpassed my expectations. Decent quality, good acting, some of the quirky fallout humor, etc. I enjoyed it.

I find the show to be just OK. I'm on episode 7 right now. I actually much prefer the flashbacks VS the present day story. I'd like a whole season just about vault tec building the vaults, manipulating world events, etc...

I also started enjoying the show a lot more when I resigned myself to the fact that maximus is just a low int, high lck build so that his actions make more sense.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago

I had a lot of fun figuring out the characters builds. Maximus being the low int build made him great instead of insufferable.

I haven't been enjoying it too much but it has been alright, I'm giving it a pass. If it continues this way though I'm not going to like it. My main complaints so far:

spoilerIn the first episode they just let Vault 32 people into Vault 33 after he makes a speech about not knowing what the surface is like or what humanity has become like. You'd think there'd have been the slightest amount of precaution especially after they make it clear that it's been a long time, and there was an unexpected change of overseer. You'd think her father would remember at least some of the people from the last exchange, you'd think at least one person would have checked in Vault 32, you'd think one person would have checked the radiation levels or that there would be some automated system. And holy shit the fight scene between Maximus in the power armor and The Ghoul, he could have crushed his arms and head like 3 times and instead chose to throw him over and over again? Even with a new user of the power armor, if he got a grasp of an enemy could just crush their bones.

How far in are you?

Re the fight with the ghoul… remember that not only is Maximus new to the armor, he’s also dumb as rocks. In game he’d have an int score of like…. 2… maybe.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago (2 children)

I feel like the vault stuff was explained pretty decently. Hank mentions telegrams back and forth and that it was a regular exchange (triennial I think? So every 3 years?). And, without giving anything away, the raiders intricately knew what they were doing so it makes some sense they'd be able to fake it well enough.

The ghoul VS power armor fight did require a significant suspension of disbelief, but two main characters fighting in like episode 1 or 2 (can't remember), they can't exactly kill one of them off. I guess you could complain they wrote themselves into a corner though, which could have been avoided.

Ultimately I enjoyed it, I'm just not sure I enjoyed it enough to recommend to people, especially people that don't already have a significant love for fallout.

Just saw the power armor fight last night. I just see it as application of video game logic, and kind of appreciated it that way. Ghoul dude is clearly wearing some armor or something since he tanked bullets to the back. I mean, in the games you can tank a nuke if you're wearing the right armor.

If you watch it as Fallout: The TV Show rather than a TV show set in the Fallout universe, it all feels very natural.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago

He's also very drugged with the healing stuff fighting off the radiation poisoning.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago

lol, yea. Ghoul has levelled up a few times so he is more of a bullet sponge than random NPCs :)

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago

Some of the dialog sounds exactly like some of the dialog choices right from the games. And I love it.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago

That's fair, which is the reason I'm giving it a pass. It does feel like it's embracing video game logic which is fine by me. Not everything needs to be realistically believable to be fun to watch. Thanks for writing that, it's helping shift my perspective a bit, I want to enjoy it and I think this will help.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago (1 children)

The ghoul actually mentions that Maximus should've read the manual for the power armor. He hasn't used it for long and as far as we know he's about as inexperienced as one could be.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago (1 children)

as far as we know he’s about as inexperienced as one could be.

Incorrect, he grew up around the power armor, he asked Titus in the vertiberd if he had modified his power armor for mobility. He clearly knew a lot about the power armor, you'd think he'd have read the user manual many times since he was a child. To assume Maximus' character only knows as much as anyone else about power armor is seriously hard to believe.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I took that as like a kid who grew up reading car magazines, but if you threw them behind the wheel would have no real idea what they are doing. I'm thinking of it kind of like fallout 3 where it won't even let you wear the armor until you find someone willing to give you "power armor training". Something something "if you don't know what you're doing, the armor will snap your bones".

Also, as someone else said, Maximus is clearly a low-int build, so even if he's read it, he didn't retain all of it, lol.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago

He might've grown up around power armors, but I doubt he had ever worn one before.

I want it now Please

Does anyone else think Lucy looks like the tiny alien that talked about Orion’s Belt in MIB

[–] [email protected] 0 points 6 months ago

She's one beautiful alien, that's for sure.

Her eyes are so big, I seriously wondered if it was a cgi/ai character at times....

Also, Walton Goggins is so good. Just started rewatching Vice Principals 🤣

Shes got a smidge of a Battle Angel Alita thing going on, but that ain't all that bad.

I did like it, don't mind a second season. But as a OG fan of the old games it's hard to be as rabid about it as the kids of today. If I detach from it not being games to begin with and what the universe is supposed to be, it's rather okay =)

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago

There were some plot points in the very beginning I questioned (the hostage scene didn’t quite make sense. Overall I still really enjoyed the plot, the rising action was alright

When alls said and done, this was a good Prime original. It ain’t HBO, it ain’t Sundance, but for prime originals? Pretty good imo

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago (1 children)

That's what I do with all TV/Movie adaptations. Is so much easier to just sit back and enjoy when you aren't constantly comparing it to something it's not.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

I am starting to go even further with all movies. Once I stumble across something I think I might want to see, I will actively avoid all trailers and discussions about it.

No expectations. Zero. De nada.

It helps a lot for me. I even kinda enjoyed 65 using this method. And then when I see something like Godzilla Minus One... whoa boy!

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago (5 children)

Just finished season 1 and I was seriously underwhelmed. It's well done and all, but the story is extremely incoherent and ultimately pointless.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Yeah the writing is the weakest part of it for sure.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago

Yeah, it was just fine. Same as the games, it was okay but seems to hold itself in much higher regard than it should

POCNOT, please. If you want to get the acronym right.

I still don't agree, but that's your call.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago (1 children)

WTF acronym are you talking about? I've encountered the PICNIC variant of PEBKAC a few times, but never POCNOT. DDG was unhelpful in this regard.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Problem on couch, not on TV.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 6 months ago

Damn, now I feel kinda dumb. I should have been able to work that out from what I already knew. Thanks for responding!

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I'm curious. What do you mean by incoherent and ultimately pointless.

I found the story pretty simple to follow, so I'm not sure what you mean there.

As far as ultimately pointless, do you mean the writing was bad or do you mean the outcome was bleak?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago (1 children)

It's simple to follow, sure, but it really felt like gameplay quests being completed in whatever sequence rather than an actual story being told.

I know it's based on a game and should resemble it as such, but if it's not appealing to those who never played it, they are missing a huge part of the potential audience.

For instance I've also never played The Last of Us, and that series was absolutely brilliant.

And yes, with pointless I mean bad writing and extremely poor character development. In the end I liked none of them.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago

How could you not like the Ghoul? I can't follow your logic on the story, it's flowed fine and had coherence across the season with maybe the exception of episode 6 which was almost a bottle episode.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago (2 children)

Admit it, you went into it ready to hate it and you were never gonna like it

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

No, I had zero expectations as I had never played the game and knew nothing about it other than what the name already implied.

If I feel like I'm not going to like something, I don't waste my time confirming that.

For instance I went into The Last of Us with equally zero expectations and also only knowing that it was based on a popular game, and it was the best series of 2023 I've watched.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 7 months ago

People are allowed to have different opinions than you.. I also was underwhelmed by the show. Lots of people don't like super popular shows.
