Even if somebody needs to die to make a street safer, it would at least make the street safer. Most times, people die, nothing happens.

I wish streets got improved when people died. That sounds extremely optimistic for most of the US.

It is similar in the UK, there are a couple of junctions on my daily commute where I see people jump red lights every single day and that have on numerous occasions put me (a cyclist) in danger because of this.

I have raised this issue and asked about the possibility of red light cameras to try and deter these idiots. I get the same response every time that they won't even consider putting in safety measures until there are multiple serious accidents caused by it.

Make a fake sign and put it up. If they won't do anything to protect your life, then take matters into your own hands.

Whilst fine in theory if no one is getting fines then a sign will not deter people as they will actively look for the supporting equipment as well. I also don't have the money or resources to make a convincing looking.

I'm well aware of how people act at these hot spots and so I am ever vigilant, I was more concerned about the occasional cyclist who isn't aware and often less observant due to their infrequent dealings with cunts in cars whilst on a bike.

If you wanna start throwing the term budget around then it is time to rethink the entire way we build roads and cities because the north american methods are incredibly expensive to build and maintain. The budget would be far less limited if we used it to build better.

Agreed. Building TOD communities is the gold standard. Lots of municipalities do have legacy infrastructure that doesn't match modern design principles. In those circumstances no matter how big your budget is it will never be enough to rebuild all infrastructure.

Difficult choices have to be made. i.e. spend $450k to build a fully signaled crosswalk for a school that has no accident history, or spend a about twice that to add lights to a signed intersection with multiple fatal collisions. If you can only afford to do one, and not both... No matter what you do people will be unhappy.
