Don't make the same mistake I made. When progressing through the story, you'll eventually unlock an operator. I won't say what it is, but when you do unlock your operator don't ignore them, get a decent amp and amp parts and level them up. Quest Lines later will require use of your amp and void powers associated with the operator.

Completing a certain very long and cinematic quest will reward your operator with an amp that can clear most if not all content. Remembering to equip that has been good enough for me, I haven't done any grind yet and I'm doing endgame stuff.
I had a really hard time with the umbra quest and an under leveled amp, to the point where I legit cheesed one of the fights by hiding at the top of a giant tree statue. I don't want to spoil it for the OP, but what quest would that be?
New War.
Ok so operators are important whatever they are
I’m assuming it will be obvious when I have one of the mysterious things
Edit: also thanks for no spoilers
Oh yeah it'll be obvious, just follow the story quests and keep unlocking the junctions and you'll eventually unlock an operator to use.
You're going to want to do quests when they become available and the Star Chart is generally more important than the Open Worlds (Dungeons as you call them). They unlock new quests and more of the story, and more stuff is from them than the Open Worlds. Some gameplay tips:
-
Weapon mods: Damage categories are multiplicative to each-other, multiple mods within a category are additive. So, you'll do a lot more damage if you put different categories on than stack up any individual one. The categories are Basic(ex Serration), Elemental (ex Cryo Rounds), Multi-Shot (ex Split Chamber), Critical (ex Vital Sense), & Faction (ex Bane of Grineer). Note: Faction damage only works on the specified faction.
-
Damage Types: There's several types of health and they each take more or less damage up to a plus or minus 75% based on which damage type you're doing. The common health types are Ferrite Armor(Grineer), Shields(Corpus), Infested Flesh(Infested). To do the most damage use Corrosive Damage against Grineer, Magnetic against Corpus, and Gas against Infested. These are all hybrid elements made with two different elemental mods. Note: This is something of an exception to the above point, making the right element is worth the extra mod but otherwise add a category of damage.
-
Weapon Presets: When you view a weapon or warframe you'll see an A, B, and C at the top of the menu. These are your presets, you can set up any piece of equipment three ways and be able to easily change between those three builds without needing to take notes or memorize it and manually make the alterations. This makes making use of the first two points much less of a hassle. Note: You can rename them so you can tell at a glance which preset does what even if you've been away for a while.
-
Survival: You have both Shield and Health in most Warframes. The Shield takes 50% damage from all sources except Viral & Toxic which ignore shields entirely (for you and the enemy). Then you have health which takes an amount of damage based on your armor number. Some Warframes primarily use Health while others primarily use Shield to stay alive. Gauss is a 'shield-frame', meaning that he relies on his shield. As such you're going to want to focus on improving his shield capacity and regeneration when you're feeling a little too squishy. Note: Shield frames struggle fighting the Infested because they use Toxic & Viral, Health frames almost universally have an ability that allows them to self-heal and they need high armor to stay alive.
-
Agility: Speed is life if you have fast reaction time. The faster you move the more inaccurate the enemies are. I believe this is more than a linear relationship (ie you go n faster they shoot n+x less accurately). Most Warframes can move fast enough to dodge most incoming fire if you've got the reaction time to handle it. Gauss and Volt are the best warframes for taking advantage of this.
-
Nightmare Mode: As you unlock more of the Star Chart you'll occasionally find one or several missions you've unlocked highlighted in red with a little swirl icon. When this happens you can choose to do that mission with an added penalty that it will show you. If you complete the mission you will receive a Nightmare Mod each of which has two positive effects. These things are frequently worth the effort and you'll frequently be able to get randoms to help if you run it open to the public. If it's too hard or just annoying ignore them, the mods are nice to have but you could trade for them or just forget about them for now.
I think I'll stop for now as it's past time for me to get to bed and I don't want to make this too big a post.
Yeah I was about to hit the hay myself but I didn’t know you could combine elements I was using just one (like shock or fire) since I thought they’d cancel out. But let’s say I use my ability that puts out a ring of heat or cold, can I then use a weapon that has a shock mod to make those combination elements or does it have to be from the one weapon
If you have two elemental mods they'll combine to make one combination element. In the menu you can search for Viral, Magnetic, Radiation, Blast, Gas, or Corrosive and it'll show you which two elements make it if you have both of them. Or if you're still hunting down staple mods you can reference Damage on the wiki to know what to look for. Unfortunately it has to be on the same item to make a combo element. You can't modify what element your powers do on the fly.
Alright thanks for the info
No problem. This is mostly centered on beginners, there's more for when you're a bit further in the game but didn't want the tips to be overwhelming or unhelpful to where you are currently. The only semi-advanced thing was calling out that Faction damage is good. Since it does nothing to all other factions some people discount it. Learning to use it now should save you pain in the future.
Ooh ok
Yeah I was definitely kinda shrugging it off too
But I’m assuming an upgraded faction damage plus that factions element weakness means big damage
Oh yeah, it really is. I was going to type up a big reply with a lot of math but it's a little overwhelming so I'll just lay out the hypothetical and show the results:
Imagine a gun that does 10 damage. Nice round number that's easy to multiply. If we use max-ranked mods from each category (and using the basic versions, not any special ones) and then factor in the bonus damage from doing the right damage type your 10 damage per shot gun now does 340.7 damage per shot (on average, including mutlishot and crits). Then let's run through again and only leave off the faction damage. Your 10 damage gun now only does 286.2 damage per shot, 54.5 damage less than with it. This difference only gets more exaggerated the bigger the base number your weapon does is.
Note: This math isn't perfectly accurate as it assumes the weapon's base damage isn't going to be modified by what type of health your hitting. This damage type accounts for a very small proportion of the overall damage so while your numbers won't be exactly as shown it should be close.
If you're interested, I can invite you to my clan and help you progress ingame. The best goal for new players to have is to unlock more planets. The planets are connected with junctions that each have a list of challenges to complete before you unlock the next planet. The challenges teach you how each planet works, teach you important game mechanics in the order you should learn them, and make sure you're keeping up on the main story.
If you're happy in Fortuna, you could also just hang out there and increase your rep with Solaris United, but open worlds are gonna start getting a bit hard compared to regular missions unless you have a great build. If you progress the star chart, you'll be introduced to all the ways of making your gear stronger at a good pace. Plus, the main story starts getting really interesting around Uranus and eventually you'll get far enough in the plot to learn what Warframe is actually about.
Ok glad to know there is an over arching story.
As for clans, coming from planetside, do they lean more towards a glorified friends list or actually useful. In planetside you could do things like call in orbital strikes or vehicles discount, basically is there a bonus for being in a clan?
A lot of weapons and some warframes, plus most archwings, you can only get the blueprints from clan research. My clan has done most of the research but not all. We also have a drydock for your railjack, a crimson branch for trading kuva liches, and a bash lab for your k-drive. Don't worry, you're not supposed to know what railjacks and kuva liches are yet, and you won't be able to get one of either for quite a while. But once you get an archwing, I'd be happy to take you on my railjack.
Yeah I just started the archwing quest so I’ll take you up on that offer soon (couple days knowing my level of focus lmao)
Hey, nice going, I saw earlier today you were still doing mercury junction. You're progressing fast.
Yeah I fought the phantom of Loki and gauss prime just shredded it in over drive like I didn’t even see the health bar deplete looooool
But yeah the bio weapon is where I am at and the infested was introduced where I defended a bomb so this story starting to get some juice!
Oh man, you're gonna like the mystery of the arcane codices when you get to that part.
Ooo
Also when doing the archwing quest I went to a void portal, some void bomb during the infested bomb part (lotus said stripping all organic life) and the O-something kin and I’m so confused
Is there a part I missed or is this stuff just dropped out of nowhere
The Orokin were a powerful and opulent empire thousands of years ago. You're actually from the Orokin era, and so are your warframes, but you've lost your memory from all that time in cryosleep and you don't know much about them anymore. You know more than an average joe, but that's not saying much because the average joe knows next to nothing except that they left behind a bunch of ruins. Ordis is in the same boat as you, he's an Orokin era cephalon, but most of his memory is corrupted. If you keep going on the main quest, you might just learn some of the secrets of the Orokin, and what the hell happened that caused their empire to fall. It had something to do with a great war, you know that much, but you don't know who the war was against. Nobody does, except maybe the Lotus.
So basically a mysterious war happened that no one knows nothing about that wiped out an empire that everyone also knows nothing about
As for the void is that just your sci-fi placeholder “kill everything” energy
I’m just not alway the most attentive in lore so I’m just making sure I didn’t miss anything
Yep. It was a long time ago, and the galaxy has since gone through thousands of years of oppression at the hands of the Corpus and the Grineer, both of whom are not interested in preserving history that contradicts their propaganda.
The void is a place. And it's a place that does not conform to the laws of consensus reality. That's destructive, yes, but it's more complex than that. The most obvious effect of void contamination is it causes madness. That's why you face a bunch of "corrupted" corpus and grineer in void fissure missions. They've been driven mad by the void and are operating according to goals and motivations unknown to any sane person. It's actually super weird that the Tenno aren't corrupted by void fissures and by travelling to the void. You can be exposed to void energy no problem and you're basically fine. Maybe you'll learn why that is in a future quest.
Oh that’s why enemies pop up in void quests
Ok well that’s for the spoiler free explanation definitely explained the perfect amount to give me something to look forward to tysm
Shoot me any more questions you have, I like explaining stuff without spoiling the plot
Saryn is good. Gauss too, but you'll probably have a much easier time making a build that can tackle higher difficulties with her than with Gauss
Edit: though, if you have Gauss prime but not saryn prime, it's more efficient to invest formas and cells in gauss, since you'll end up ditching saryn for her prime version when you eventually get her. Actually I can probably give you a few prime parts for her and help you farm the rest if you really want to play her
Alright thanks for the tip
Also I’m assuming I’ll learn what formas and cells are later
Basically, things that get you more mod capacity for a Warframe or weapon. Formas are pretty easy to obtain but cells are a little harder to get
Ok. I’m currently working on the mercury junction (or whatever comes after Venus) is this something I should be expecting to see soon or later down the line
Yes. Basically, don't worry about them too much, because I think you're still supposed to primarily get orokin catalyst and reactors (what I called cells earlier, but orokin cells are actually just a component for those) from the shop (although there are a few ways to get them for free nowadays IIRC). But if you see an alert with one of these as a reward, you should definitely get on it. If you don't know what to do with them you can just stockpile them
Alright I’m definitely gonna take a look at the wiki tho so I can decipher what the items are and how to stock pile them like you said lol
https://warframe.fandom.com/wiki/Orokin_Reactor
https://warframe.fandom.com/wiki/Orokin_Catalyst
As the wiki says, if you see a "gift from the lotus" alert, you should check out the rewards because they are usually very useful for new players.(Sometimes they're just skins though)
Oh thanks for the link. Alerts are like events like those void relic opener things. Or am I getting them mixed up with something else
Also on that not sometimes I get nothing other than the normal crafting components like on a normal mission when I equip a relic to open, is that something I’m doing wrong or just poor rng
The void relic thing are void fissures, I think there's always one going on somewhere in the star chart, but I think they can also pop up as alerts.
If you have equipped a relic and it didn't open, don't worry because it's not lost. You only lose the relic when you actually open it. If it didn't work it's because you didn't collect enough reactant to open it before the end of the timer/mission. There should be a mission objective tracking this on the left of the screen during the mission, that says "reactant collected x/10".
Your main priority should be to progress through the star chart and clear all nodes, while doing that you will continuously unlock new sections of the main story, complete those as well.
This will slowly unlock all the (almost) endless content, game modes, frames and more that warframe has to offer.
Try out new weapons and frames along the way and always try to level something on the side so you keep increasing your mastery level.
Ok
Are nodes like the dungeon mission where the blink blue of you haven’t done them, like just kinda do those and I’ll get my footing as I go?
As for planet progression is there a particular order, does each planet has its pros and cons. Like why would I wanna visit fortuna for free roam rather than the plains on earth or vise versa
And then as I said before I have gauss prime and his two weapons that’s an AOE (I think it’s aoe) rifle and a dual weilding pistol rocket launcher, but should I stick with those cus they feel really powerful
And then on the topic of gauss any tips for him if you know him? I’ve been using the #2 armor ability on combat whenever I can, and activate over drive if there’s a lot of enemies or a few tough ones (or both). Then using his #3 ability the damage circle, I hold the button to use heat if I’m not in overdrive, but if I am I’ll use the cold one to keep the battery up. Is that generally a good strategy? I also have problems keeping energy up, but I think that’s more user error
Free Roam missions will generally be used to gather specific resources, earn reputation with a faction or quest progress. I'd recommend against doing one unless you know you're doing it for one of those reasons, and other than quests, you really shouldn't worry about it for a while.
The difference between plants is most generally described as just being different level ranges, as you get stronger, it's better to do higher levels because they give better rewards.
The game generally has 3 large gating mechanics: Star Chart, Quests and Mastery Rank.
Sometimes quests and Star Chart progress over lap, sometimes a quest is locked behind star chart progress or star chart progress is locked behind a quest, sometimes they just 2 different things. The more you unlock them, the greater the variety of warframes, weapons and mods you'll have, but some things, largely weapons (but also very importantly the minimum number of mod points you have for everything) are gated by what mastery rank you have. You gain MR largely by leveling warframes, weapons and companions to max level the first time.
For a while, you should try to make sure every mission you do is in service to at least one of getting new warframes, weapons or companions, progressing your star chart by completing new missions (especially those which lead to a junction to a new planet) or progressing a quest. Additionally, during each mission you do, you should try to be leveling new warframes, weapons and companions, as many as you can while still completing the missions.
If you kill an enemy with an ability, your warframe gets all the XP. If you kill an enemy with a weapon, the weapon and warframe share the XP. If a teammate kills an enemy near you, the XP gets spread between your warframe and each weapon. If the thing receiving XP is max level, the XP is totally wasted.
Ok thanks for the advice
So using the same weapons and frame (like my gauss prime) is generally bad
But my focus should just be progressing across a planet
And as for this
For a while, you should try to make sure every mission you do is in service to at least one of getting new warframes, weapons or companions, progressing your star chart by completing new missions (especially those which lead to a junction to a new planet) or progressing a quest. Additionally, during each mission you do, you should try to be leveling new warframes, weapons and companions, as many as you can while still completing the missions.
Wdym like getting Warframe blueprints or what
No it’s not necessarily bad, it’s a game after all and you should enjoy playing it. However, to progress and unlock all content you will need to level a decent amount of weapons and frames for the mastery. So try to get new frames/weapons as you’re progressing through the blinking nodes & the story quests. If you enjoy the new frame or weapon, continue using them, if not then just go back to one you enjoy, but try to always max the frames/weapons level before moving on.
At the core I mean don't run a mission to just run a mission, have a reason. Ask yourself "why am I running this mission?" If you can't answer with something related to a quest, progressing your star chart or building a new frame or weapon (blueprint or materials), that mission might not be a good use of your time at the moment.
Well yes and no, in the end they will have to clear every star chart node to progress so that is also an option as the reason, even if there is no specific progress towards a frame or weapon.
Ah makes sense
So is there anything that will let me progress towards getting new weapons or is it like getting new Warframes (and their parts) where it will be obvious
A good tip for weapons is to check out the market tab in game, go to the weapons section and sort by only show with blueprint available. It will show a good number of weapons where you can get the blueprint for credits and you can check if you have the necessary resources to build it in advance.
Otherwise, you will unlock blueprints for weapons during missions and quests. Also look on YouTube how the relic system works, that will explain how you get prime warframes and weapons.
Alright. Thanks. So basically just like I’ve gotten frame blueprints from those free roam missions o can do the same with weapons right. Or I could just buy the blueprints from the market is what your saying
As a new player you will mostly get new weapons blueprints from the market because they are generally cheap to craft and you won't have to worry about grinding blueprints/parts drops.
You can also get some weapons as drops but just like with Warframes, there is usually one part that you will basically not get by accident because of its low drop rates.
