More than half of Americans reported receiving at least one scam call per day in 2024. To combat the rise of sophisticated conversational scams that deceive victims over the course of a phone call, we introduced Scam Detection late last year to U.S.-based English-speaking Phone by Google public beta users on Pixel phones.

We use AI models processed on-device to analyze conversations in real-time and warn users of potential scams. If a caller, for example, tries to get you to provide payment via gift cards to complete a delivery, Scam Detection will alert you through audio and haptic notifications and display a warning on your phone that the call may be a scam.

What the actual fuck? I don't remember the last time I got a scam call; might not be this year.

I got a phishing email last week.

Apparently another reason to be glad I'm in NZ.

US here. I get several a day. Finally starting answering and telling them to fuck off, I don't have a job (lie, but I'm still broke).

I'm European. I was dating an American once. During our date he got several calls, all labelled "likely spam". His phone was on mute but I could see the screen. When I asked about it he said he gets them all day non stop.

EU also has very strong anti-spam laws (not sure how much is eu-level regulation and how much is local). It's probably been a decade since I received a spam call. I just reported it.

That's the thing. 10 years ago I was a Google simp because I was so excited about the tech. Nowadays, Google could claim they solved cancer and I wouldn't trust them. They have lost all good will in my eyes.
