I'm very much not a new Yorker but for my city, those apartments are in the part of town where the marketing companies are and the beauticians are. They are like double the rent of your typical house-share and 1 bed.
It's also "a dump"
young scruffy bachelor lives here with no job, who doesn't have much but a big heart
You'd also be broke if you lived in that apartment.
Maybe it's the CEO's second place, so they can extract some more money from the studio?
