I'd assume it used a non-colloquial definition of sunburn. Your skin can take a certain amount of UV light exposure, after that damage starts to build up. You won't see that damage at first and only notice once it builds up enough for your skin to become reddened.
No SPF, or sunblocks, just bare skin
