Simplify: Don't use Facebook.

I haven't used it in... maybe a decade. I don't even remember the last time. I never used Instagram. I never used Facebook Messenger.

People are scared about what might happen if they stop, but nothing bad ever happened. I simply stopped seeing a constant stream of depressing bullshit.

I dont use Facebook proper, but now I'm back to using Facebook because my girlfriend's family uses it for the family chat. So desktop mode on my phone online it is because that app will NEVER be installed on my phone

I would lose contact with the people who are only on Facebook, which for my age group is a lot.

Are you sure? I have friends who plan things on Facebook, but friends who know I don't use it message me to tell me about it.

I haven't even started since it started 😬 Never understood the appeal of watching people's fake-lifes. Even less a feed of that.

For a while it was a good way to get back in touch with people you'd lost contact with years ago. After that, it was still a good way to organize get-togethers. But yeah, the feed has been a shit-show pretty much since the beginning.

There are friends that only use messenger to communicate and you need Facebook to use it. That and marketplace are the only reasons I use it.

I thought this up until a few years ago. When I text these friends, they text back.

Also you can browse FB marketplace without an account. I have my roommate do the deed if I really need something, like a car this year, but most of the time I don't bother.

same for amazon, ebay, kijiji, no need for an app

I haven't had Facebook in a few years but I'll admit there's still a few subreddits I'll check every now and then for news about things I follow because there just isn't enough activity in the communities here, and I'll absolutely suffer through Reddit's atrocious mobile site before I install the app.

Old.reddit.com and if you have an account, go into settings and opt out of the redesign.

Honestly, on mobile, the new design is somewhat more easy to navigate. Regardless, neither is good on mobile, though. But on desktop, I absolutely use old.reddit for the niche subreddits I still visit every now and again.

Yeah hard agree with this. Old reddit sucks on mobile unfortunately while new reddit sucks everywhere but is nonetheless slightly more usable on mobile (especially with ublock and a few other plugins). I am very hopeful we keep growing over here so the niche communities can start to get traction and I can stop going over there entirely.

What is the best way to foster niche communities? Do we just need more users overall?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)

Yeah I think we just need more users. I mean a lot of my niche ones exist on here, which mean other users have already cared enough to start it up, but there's just not enough people to get them active.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago

Not just users, users who post.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago

Yeah, it's the same here. We should try to get those more active. Now the app sits there on an island losing it's permissions until I need it again.

I made a FB again to invite some old high school friends to my wedding. I do not miss Facebook at all.

They love the prospect

"Look at that! I don't need to use FB at all."
