Dope. I love the tar pits. I only visited once as a kid and would love to go back.

I was visiting my grandma and she had to pick me up at LAX. We stayed somewhere in LA overnight and in the morning she asked if there was anything touristy I wanted to do before we drove to where she lived. I emphatically chose the La Brea Tar Pits! I was 14? That sounds right.

It rocked. I have a cool shirt that doesn't fit in my pile of cool shirts that need to become a quilt.

I didn’t have dermal ossicles on my bingo card for 2024.

That is awesome but...where meme?

In a Dawkins book.

That ruler is really odd. Why start at zero on one side, and not the other?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago

That's how the imperial measurement system works. Don't try to understand it.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (2 children)

Because the numbers are upside down, if you flip the ruler over so you can read it, you can measure from thatb same side.

But I agree, it's a bit weird, I'd prefer both zeros on the same side

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago

If both sides were the same scale, flipping makes sense. But with two different scales… no sense is made.

I'm not sure you see what I am talking about. The ruler starts at 8 for the inch side. It clearly shows all 4 sides in the image. The more I look at it, though, I am suspecting that it isn't a real ruler but a piece of paper that was cut with scissors.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago

Oh I didn't see that, good point. You might be right about the cut paper, but maybe it's folded instead? Look at the bottom left corner, the paper extends below the printed line, almost like it printed crooked? But I think more likely it's folded and that's the backside of the other half of the ruler? Like, is so low resolution that we can't tell it's a loop of paper there, maybe.

Saber toothed tigers

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago

Once they developed the armor, probably nothing which let them grow to the giant size.

Armadillos: am I a joke to you?

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (2 children)

I looked it up and xenarthra is a super order and armadillos are in xenarthra with the rest of the ones I was thinking of.

Apparently since pangolin scales are more like having fingernails all over it doesn't count as armor.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)

I think they mean that giant sloths are related to armadillos & pangolins

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago

Pangolins aren’t in Xanarthra though

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago

Oh neat, TIL!

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago (1 children)

The more I learn about giant ground sloths, the cooler they become.

[–] [email protected] 0 points 8 months ago

I was with you until I found out about the present day sloths and the latrines.
