A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

I started watching the movies again and I'm almost done and it's fascinating. If you ignore the harry voldermort stuff and look at the wizard world, there are so many parallels with trump and the administration.

The more power voldermort gains (and even for JK he represents absolute evil), the more the world changes.

First its influence over the ministry, influence over the education system (Delores). Influence over the press, and killing press that is negative about the government. Locating half blood wizards (there's a parallel with immigrants), I'm not at the end so I don't know if the lock up halfblood wizards.

That's just how is Fascism.

Any Fascists-like regime, fictional or not, works the same.

her books are basically implying her terf beliefs, some have said the goblins represented jewish people.

Oh you mean someone might interpret the sinister race of greedy hook nosed goblin creatures who run all of the banks as possibly being influenced by anti semitic tropes? That's news to me!

Don't forget that the first version of the movie had a giant Star Of David in the middle of the floor of Gringotts. And yes, while that is a real bank with the Star Of David on the floor, maybe it would have been a good idea to not have it framed in shot if you're already being accused of antisemitism.

I feel like I was in the minority that saw that for the first time in the movies and was like...dude how fucking outright antisemitic can you be in a children's movie?

I had never watched the movies or read the books as a kid because my parents thought they would make me turn to satanism and so I was horrified watching a friend play lego harry Potter and I see this anti semitic stereotype hoarding gold so I was like "bro what is that" and he was like "oh yeah that's a goblin they run the wizard banks" and I was like "so wait a race of evil creatures with giant hook noses run all the banks in Harry Potter? That's sketchy as fuck" and he was like "Huh... Never noticed it before but yeah that's messed up"

The globins follow a lot of harmful Jewish stereotypes but I'm not sure it's obvious whether they're intended as racist caricatures or if it's just bad writing. It's not unreasonable to assume that though when you put it beside much more blatant examples, such as calling the black guy "Shacklebolt" and the Asian girl "Cho Chang".

Seamus Finnegan,

Hot take; the reason Seamus Finnigan kept accidentally blowing stuff up was because JK Rowling wanted to be racist towards Irish people… She literally has him blow up a bridge

JK leans heavily into things "biological nature" or "Born Nature" as a reoccurring theme. Hagrid is inherently violent and Voldemort's villain back story being he was a rape baby.

Absolutely, I just meant to point out that there's far more blatant examples so no need to couch your language in phrases like "some have said". Goblins have been antisemitic caricatures in fantasy for a long time so it's easy for a bad writer to just regurgitate existing tropes, meaning a racist writer can use that as a shield, but it's much harder to justify naming your black character after slave imagery.

Speaking of self-inserts, remember when she wrote that detective story with long segments that are just people on Twitter accusing the main character of transphobia?

Her brain's just fully melted at this point.
