So far I think it's mostly just fine. It started off strong but has fallen off a bit for me after E4/5. There are still good bits but I feel like the writing is the weakest part of the show, weaker than S1. The pacing is very rushed and there's too much of a reliance on "telling" rather than "showing". But the action, production and casting are all top notch. Bella, Isabella, Young and Kaitlyn are all killing it, even if I'm not always happy with the direction they're given by the writers.

I loved S1 and have re-watched it all the way through several times. I don't see myself re-watching S2 quite as often. That is unless E6/7 turn out to be incredible, but even then getting though E4/5 will be a bit of a chore.

Tap for spoilerNot happy with how "THAT scene" turned out in the second episode. I played the game twice and it was gut wrenching both times. In the show I felt nothing. I guess they wanted to make it family friendly? Abbys plan was also clear from the very beginning which didn't help.

Not sure why the show runners decided to not include Tommy in the Lodge scene but instead have him fight at this lame, made-up zombie horde attack at Jackson*. So now he didn't even see Abby and her gang, who he is later supposed to look for. Maybe he won't.

* Did TLoU zombie hordes ever just randomly run in a direction without any clear goal? I don't remember that happening in the games. But in this episode they just attacked the town without reason. This makes them unpredictable.

In the first season they established a big difference between the show and the game. Spores aren’t really thing, it’s a cordyceps network. In season 1 they showed if you disturb the roots it alerts nearby infected to the location and they swarm. The roots were growing through the tunnels and were disturbed mid charge towards Joel and gang.

I’m really curious how they will handle the Ellie and Dina scene later that involves spores in the game.

They switched up the pairs for a few reasons.

  1. They wanted to give Dina more of a reason to go on the adventure with Ellie since she was also attached to Joel in this version. She is also going to be the one with the visual information on what these people look like and where they are.
  2. Since this is a bigger cast than just you as Ellie, I think they wanted to figure out how to use people more, so Tommy leading the charge made sense since they added the town attack. I’m sure he will feel a certain way not having been there when it happened.
  3. To give Jesse moe screen time early on since there’s still the likelihood we won’t be seeing him for a bit.

Makes sense.

I must have missed or forgot that the roots are alerting the infected. They were always just there sometimes but I don’t remember what they were doing.

To be fair, when the season started I also forgot. It wasn’t until I saw them change course that I remembered that scene from last season. It’s why the guy who broke through the tube was so panicked and ran to Tommy, he knew infected were about to swarm the area because of the live tendrils in the pipe.

Now that you mention it, "the" scene did feel a bit rushed. A few things did happen too fast this episode. I feel like there could have easily been another 30 minutes of runtime to build up suspense.

The hordes attacked the town because of those roots from the pipes. It's like a hivemind thing or something. I can't remember if we had that in the game.

My guess is this series will diverge heavily from the game in this season because the game’s storyline alone would be too much of a drag. They need more things happening in different locations, like Jackson and maybe somewhere else.

I don’t remember the roots being a thing in the games, I don’t necessarily mind it. We’ll see what they plan with it.

I'm super angry about who they cast as Abby.

Not like her. At. All.

Pretty much every other aspect of the show. Absolutely top notch. I am hoping Abby grows on me, but I dunno.

It's an adaptation. Given how small Bella is do you think their future fight scenes would be even if they got an MMA fighter to play Abby? You're making a problem that doesn't exist honestly. Seperate the game and the show, you'll enjoy it more.

Say what? You saw the "don't pull your punches" scene, right? It felt pretty believable to me!

Anyways, it can't be done, lol. Abby's physicality is a huge part of her background to me. Like I see her in the game and I just know she spent every moment from when the hospital thing happened to when she got to Jackson honing her body into a weapon of revenge.

I agree. I can't remember exactly how she was introduced in the game, but this does feel like it spoils future events a bit.
