From the who-needs-precogs dept.:

Researchers are alleged to be using algorithms to analyse the information of thousands of people, including victims of crime, as they try to identify those at greatest risk of committing serious violent offences.

The scheme was originally called the “homicide prediction project”, but its name has been changed to “sharing data to improve risk assessment”. The Ministry of Justice hopes the project will help boost public safety but campaigners have called it “chilling and dystopian”.

Would it be far fetched to apply this technology to politicians?

This surely won't turn out to decide that POC are more likely to kill...

It's okay, they'll probably make a rule that anyone who checks that is a traitor. /s

The UK seems like an okay place for the most part but man, are their government agencies extra aggro or what.

So psychopass.. gl with that.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago

As a tool to help find patters and collate police reports and notes this could be very useful. We've recently seen how the police dropped the investigation of Russel Brand, while a TV documentary found the truth. I'm betting there are tons of cases like this. Software tools (including LLMs) can scan large amounts of text. And there might be lots of cases that will be obvious once you look at all the pieces.

I see no possible downsides to this

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago

Will they also create prediction-proof glass? Because they'll need it.

Germany's AfD gets a lot of publicity, but I'm betting on the UK being the next Western democracy to fall into fascism.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

They're already signing with the USA. Before Germany? Idk.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Germany will be among the last to fall. They have some guardrails up for all the Reich reasons.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

They have guardrails yes, but those are only a mildly effective stalling method. Fundamentally Germany is falling at breakneck speed too, so those guardrails will only be a mild inconvenience.

Having lived in Germany in the '90s and given current political winds, I don't see AfD being able to get very far. Granted, this was the presumption of the NSDAP at first, and that didn't go well.

But Germany has the benefit of "well, we done fucked up" that we do not in the states. Prior art has to be domestic to many voters, and we don't have that.

Remember those AT&T ads from the '90s? "You will."

We got all of those things and more. You know who didn't bring it to you? AT&T.

Having lived in Germany in the '90s and given current political winds, I don't see AfD being able to get very far.

Two crucial things have changed between the 90s and now, though: the standard of living and the number of immigrants (both real and as perceived by Germans). The former is obvious, and as for the latter between the 90s and now there have been multiple (American-caused European-enabled) refugee crises in Europe due to the influx of Middle Eastern people fleeing war. This has made Germany go haywire, counteracting any advantage they may have had on the anti-fascism front over Americans—who are for the most part already used to having Others in the same environment as the Self.

According to a study in 2018 by Leipzig University, 56% of Germans sometimes thought the many Muslims made them feel like strangers in their own country, up from 43% in 2014. In 2018, 44% thought immigration by Muslims should be banned, up from 37% in 2014.[26] -Wikipedia

This sort of disdain for an Other is the indicator for fascism, and it's very much on the rise in Germany.

Elon supports them whole heartedly as well as the AfD. I dunno if the UK really has a specific party spewing it cuz I just kind of ignore the UK especially after Brexit. I'm sure it's multiple people with multiple parties already though.

To be fair in America you can easily predict murders... are they overly religious? Do they hit their spouse? More specifically have they choked their spouse. Next step is always murder. I can pretend I know this cuz of my degree but it's really just cuz I watch too many True Crime shows/videos.

Also you can just check if they are poor, they will end up (not pre-meditated) murdering for food or money. I guess we should say ultra-poor at this point in American life.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

This is a bunch of "facts" that reflects your experience as a television consumer.

Religiosity does not predict odds of committing homicide. Domestic violence is indicative of higher risk, but "always" going to murder is an absurd extrapolation that isn't statistically backed up. My ex liked hitting me and throwing things at me, yet here I am.

I've no idea what you're on about with making this a class issue. Rich people are just as likely to kill their spouses; they just know how to get away with it by outsourcing.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (2 children)

I think you combined both statements as one. And should come back to me when you're sober.

  1. Choking was the line I drew
  2. Poverty causes murder out of need

Two separate things champ. Have a good day. I'm really sorry you're trying to make excuses for someone assaulting you though. That's a weird hill to... die on.

I beg you to please seek help cuz it's not cool to defend someone hitting you just because YOU survived. That's called anecdotal evidence, definitely untrue in the real world. Again, I have a degree. And I would love to take this to a private conversation if you want.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Please, don't take this to a private conversation if it's not a private matter. The topic you were discussing would benefit others and being open offers the chance for someone to jump in with a unique perspective.

Now, about the way you expressed your opinion on the assault received. I don't have a degree in psychology, but I believe you shouldn't so nonchalantly analyse someone's behavior after just one interaction and you definitely shouldn't treat it with levity ("to die on"). Also, personally, I think you should only advise people to seek help when it's for their on benefit, not because you don't approve their behavior. You might have had the best intentions, but the language you use is important.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

Okay, I also... "personally" think it's fucked up to downgrade any psychical assault against a person. Which leads to death generally.

I guess I don't care about your feelings, I care about people never staying with abusive partners.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

To be fair, I said... "if you want" which obviously they don't want to. That's not healthy but that's what they chose. You can hate on my language all you want but I am just trying to help a person.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 4 days ago

I'm not a fan of you accusing me of being altered. It's not a great look for you, either.

And I'm also not a fan of being talked down to. I'm going to leave it there, as you're making assumptions and twisting my words to make what you said somehow make sense.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 4 days ago

Fine, whatever... all I want is that sweet computer interface

[–] [email protected] 38 points 4 days ago
