Had to log in install an app and allow location (which I will be turning off) just to be able to print a test page and run the head cleaning thing… on a printer.

I swear ten years ago this crap would have seemed like malware. Requiring a full colour cartridge to print b+w is definitely a scam.

No black is printing despite it saying the cartridge has some. Waiting on a second level clean and next I’m going to try installing new drivers.

Missing my hulking reliable old printer scanner and wishing I didn’t buy a HP.

Cory Doctorow talks about how printer ink is the most expensive liquid you can buy as a consumer. More expensive than pure bred racing horse semen (gross comparison though). He suggests a response to US tariffs being that Canada disregards printer firmware copyright and undercuts the US market by offering 3rd party printer ink cartridges via illegal reverse engineering.

I wish they would and bring the tech here. You should be able to buy generic and refill.

There’s libraries but not everyone can easily get there

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I bought a printer for my dad and the refills cost more than the printer. It's built into the business model. We're in the age of the capitalist monopoly squeeze. The squeeze continues until it's squeezed dry. Same reason there's a huge number of computers heading to landfill due to windows 11 artificial hardware requirements.

It sucks. It’s going to get bad when a significant chunk of customers can no longer afford to buy - they could raise the prices but at some point infinite growth is sustainable.

I’m only hoping refurbishing places like Computerbank can salvage a lot of them. Things like Linux and Libre Office will be lifelines to older and poorer people.

If I could just get organised enough and had the mind for it I’d be all over FOSS myself

I have been very good with the limited sweets thing this lentish....until tonight when I made this creation.

Here we have vanilla bean ice cream, hot chocolate topping, coffee topping, chocolate ice magic with a biscoff crumb and a twix. It was magnificent. 5/5 yum yums.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

omg that looks so delicious

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It was! It started with the kid getting in my car with a hot fudge sundae. I thought I can do better than that and I did!

this makes my guilty treat of a handful of gummy bears look like fasting

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

I had a savemore yopro low calorie paddle pop thing. It was no 2001 twix monolith. Then I put the heater on because frankly the main thing that has me overeating is the cold at night. Eating for heating is not a solution. I'm trying to avoid that this winter. Better to pay the power company than the junk food company.

Ice creams aren't really food.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

maybe good ice cream, made with cream? but it certainly isn't a balanced dish

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

It's flavoured air.

Seeing petrol go up around some places in town. ~$2 in Brighton, $1.65 in Springy.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

New car comes with a full tank of fuel 😁

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago

Oh bugger, I forgot to fill up

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

I noticed it too so I topped up even though I had a half tank.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago

I was reminded by my manager today too. I'd better fuel up soon too. Late Easter this year means I think high prices will last a bit longer

A tutor said to me after I contributed in class,

"You said as much as you didn't say."

Huh? I'm sorry I have a really foggy brain and no one else wanted to talk.

"That's not constructive feedback" aka What the fuck you on about mate?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

I have no idea what was meant but it sounds weirdly fake-deep and neggy. 🀨

They could have just said something nice instead or thanked you for contributing

Edit: I’m hoping it was intended nicely

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I don't even know what the phrase means 😭

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

Me neither! I was so confused.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 week ago

That's what a stupid person who wants to sound wise would say.

I guarantee you they learned that recently from somewhere and have been dying to use it.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Yay: my mum got her eye surgery moved forward after much pressure

Nay: it's on Anzac Day and my aunt can't go and flights are stupidly expensive but at least my aunt has offered to chip in.

Looks like I might be doing a week back in the equatorial concrete jungle soup. Maybe a good opportunity to focus on writing uni stuff... Shame it's my favourite time of the year in melbs but honestly all that is irrelevant when my mum's eyes are at stake.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago

sending a million good wishes for your mum

and good luck on the uni writing

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

my mum got her eye surgery moved forward

Oh that is good news!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago

Yes and I won't lie, what happened to your mum definitely added fuel to the fire for me in urging my mum to take the private option and get it done asap. So thank you for sharing your experiences!
